Dispensa Matrimonial de Buenaventura de Villasenor y Ortega

Recently, I found another clue as to Juan de Aguilar Solorzano's (cc Mariana Telles de Herrera & Luisa de Araiza Medina) parents. There's a very short document that explains the relationship between Buenaventura de Villasenor and Maria Petrona del Castillo:

Informacion matrimonial entre Buenaventura de Villasenor y Ortega y Maria Petrona del Castillo y de la Parra (Guadalajara, Jalisco - Enero 26, 1756

In it Buenaventura clearly states that his father and his future bride's father are 2nd cousins. Both of which are said to descend from Francisco de Aguilar Solorzano and Ana Ruiz Galindo! Like I said, it's a short document but there's enough information out there to figure out the parentesco (At least on the Villasenor side).

Starting with Buenaventura's side:

On Maria Petrona's side, let's start with the bride as it gets murky somewhat the farther back we go (due to lack of documentation):

Alonso del Castillo cc Mariana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar
Here's where the trail goes cold since I can't find the parents of either Alonso or Mariana. Given Mariana's Escobar surname... I suspect the parentesco is on her side. Regardless, it's another clue to get us closer to Francisco de Aguilar Solorzano cc Ana Ruiz Galindo.

P.S. While looking into the del Castillo's... I ran across this matrimonial information for one of Alonso del Castillo's children (Maria del Castillo y Gonzalez) when they were married off to Lazaro Fernandez de Castaneda. In it Juan de Araiza Medina cc Maria del Castillo gives testimony. He states that his wife is the aunt of the bride! (Don't know if this was known information?) All in all, we find out that Alonso del Castillo (cc Mariana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar), Maria del Castillo (cc Juan de Araiza Medina y Islas) and a Antonio del Castillo were brothers.

P.P.S Another interesting follow-up is that Lazaro married a second time to Juana Alvarez de Castrejon y Covarrubias. It turns out that his future bride had a parentesco with his deceased first wife (Maria del Castillo y Gonzalez). In the dispensa we find that the father of Juana was Francisco de Covarrubias y Gonzalez (Son of Nicolas de Covarrubias and Juana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar - sister of Mariana Gonzalez de Escobar - mother of Maria del Castillo - Lazaro's deceased first wife). Thus we now know that Juana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar and Mariana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar were sisters. Combined with the information above, they were related closely to the Ana Ruiz Galindo y Escobar.

I went down the rabbit hole of investigating the roots of Mariana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar. As I mentioned in my previous post, the dispensa for Lazaro Fernandez de Castaneda and Juana Alvarez de Castrejon y Covarrubias yielded the discovery that Mariana Gonzalez Lozano was the sister of Juana Gonzalez Lozano (Wife of Nicolas de Covarrubias y Velasco).

In looking at the children of Nicolas de Covarrubias and Juana Gonzalez Lozano (They baptized children in Ciudad Guzman and Sayula around the 1650s and 1660s), I found that there was a common couple that were the padrinos for some of their children. Specifically, Francisco Gonzalez Lozano & Isabel de Escobar (Who sometimes used the compound last name of Escobar de Munguia!) Munguia!!! While extremely tantalizing, it doesn't really prove that they were the parents of Mariana Gonzalez Lozano and Juana Gonzalez Lozano (Even if both of these sisters used Gonzalez Lozano and Escobar). Then I remembered that I found a dispensa a while back when working on my Valladoliddispensas.com indexes. The following dispensa provided another crucial clue as to the parents of the Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar sisters...:

Dispensa Matrimonial entre Gaspar Miguel de Covarrubias y Betancur cc Maria Teresa de Munguia y Vilasenor (Tecolotlan, Jalisco Noviembre 11, 1723)

The dispensa details how Gaspar Miguel and Maria Teresa are related by their Munguia ancestry! Here's the breakdown of the parentesco based on clues I have found along this journey. Note that the "Tronco" part is pure conjecture at this point given the compound surname used by Isabel de Escobar Munguia, possible mother of the Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar sisters. It does fit nicely with the timelines and surnames of those involved. One of the witnesses (NOTE: The main witness, Francisco Gonzalez Lozano, states that the tronco is Juan de Munguia which I don't think is right. Most likely too much time had passed to know the real name of the tronco which I suspect to be Hernando de Munguia cc Isabel de Escobar):

Back to Mariana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar cc Alonso del Castillo and Juana Gonzalez Lozano y Escobar cc Nicolas de Covarrubias, we know that they are confirmed to be sisters. Going back to the baptisms for Juana and Nicolas' children, Francisco Gonzalez Lozano and Isabel de Escobar Munguia appear as padrinos in one or more of their children. We also see Antonio de Covarrbias and Maria Gonzalez as padrinos for children of Nicolas de Covarrubias and Juana Gonzalez Lozano (and vice-versa). So, I'm leaning on declaring that Juana, Mariana aaaaand Maria were sisters, children of Francisco Lozano Gonzalez cc Isabel de Munguia Escobar (daughter of Hernando and Isabel). I'm also going to throw Gaspar Gonzalez Lozano cc Isabel de la Campa y Orozco as another sibling of their given the padrinos on their children and that Gaspar was of the same generation and place as the sisters.

To sum up, I feel that all this leads to the following conjectures:

Hernando de Munguia Villela cc Isabel de Escobar y Ruiz Galindo were the parents of the following children (Their children would have been born around the 1580s -> 1600s):

Isabel de Munguia Villela y Escobar cc Francisco Gonzalez Lozano
Ana de Escobar y Munguia Villela cc Andres Lopez de Bueso (Confirmed to be a child via the Santo Oficio document)

As for the children of Francisco Gonzalez Lozano cc Isabel de Munguia Villela (Their children would have been born around the 1610s -> 1630s in Sayula, Jalisco)

Back to the relationship between Isabel de Escobar cc Hernando de Munguia and Ana Ruiz Galindo y Escobar cc Francisco de Aguilar Solorzano... I suspect them to be daughters of a Ruiz Galindo + Escobar couple. This couple would have had a son named Francisco Ruiz Galindo, brother to Ana and Isabel. (From the Santo Oficio document that calls out that Francisco Ruiz Galindo was an uncle of Ana de Escobar cc Andres Lopez Bueso).

I found another dispensa that most likely involves the same Munguia/Gonzalez Lozano/Ruiz Galindo roots:

I don't know for sure as it doesn't really dive into the particulars as to what branches of the family were involved. However the dispensa is for "parentesco en cuarto grado de consanguinidad". Here's my attempt to flesh out the parentesco with help from the data I've been uncovering:

Starting with Pedro Michel's ancestry:

Ana de Escobar y Munguia cc Andres Lopez Bueso

At least this is what I perceive to be the parentesco. I tried to follow other branches of the families involved and couldn't really find another likely parentesco. This one matches up nicely with the fact that the parentesco was reported to be in the 4th grade.

Presunto origen de la familia López-Buezo

Te felicito y te agradezco por tu investigación tan exhaustiva y los datos que de ella nos compartes. Has aportado una pista bastante reveladora sobre el origen de los López-Buezo, de la que muchos descendemos. Leí con interés el proceso inquisitorial abierto para el caso de Andrés López-Buezo, y su curiosa relación de los hechos.

En cuanto a algo que pueda aportar al debate, no es nuevo, pero sirve para volver a meditar a la luz de los descubrimientos.

Existe una dispensa, mencionada en el libro de Luz Montejano Hilton, que cita a Nicolás López-Buezo, hijo de Nicolás López-Buezo y Nicolasa Guerrero y Ocón, quien desea contraer nupcias con María de Isla y Araiza, hija de Fernando de Araiza y Antonia Téllez de Aguilar. Se encuentran relacionados por un parentesco de consanguinidad en cuarto grado igual, por ser sus bisabuelas, hermanas legítimas. Fechada en Tecolotlán en 1681.

Sobre los citados Fernando de Araiza y Antonia Téllez de Aguilar no tengo más fuentes contundentes, pero sospecho que el primero es hijo de Juan de Araiza y Medina y María González-Lozano; y la segunda hija de Juan de Aguilar y Solórzano y Mariana Téllez de Herrera. Así, la relación sería improbable por el lado de Juan de Araiza, pues era natural de Vizcaya, hijo de Hernando de Araiza y Medina y María de Guzmán. De los demás no tengo más información sobre su ascendencia.

Habría que trazar la genealogía de la rama Munguía y Escobar para cotejar con las ramas ascendentes de los Aguilar y Solórzano, así como de los Téllez de Herrera.

Ahora bien, puede que exista otra dispensa, ésta de una hermana de Nicolás López-Buezo y Guerrero: Ana María. Ella casa también con un Araiza. Bautizan a un hijo, Santiago, el 13 de Septiembre de 1700 en Tecolotlán. Confío que su dispensa manifieste mayores detalles sobre la relación de parentesco entre sus familias.

Creo que, como dices, Andrés López Buezo es con gran posibilidad el padre de Nicolás López-Buezo. Ojalá podamos encontrar un documento que lo mencione explícitamente. Tal vez la fuente esté en su testamento, pues en su defunción se establece que lo efectuó.

Es un gusto saludarlos otra vez!

Daniel, es todo un hallazgo sobre Andres López Buezo. Busqué en Córdoba y en Antequera pero no hallé nada de que nos brinde más información por ahora.

Sin embargo, quería aportar una pista más sobre los ancestros de Antonia Téllez de Aguilar.
Existe una dispensa de Manuel Capacete y Sebastiana de Pamplona en Autlán. En la dispensa se dice que Juan de Aguilar tuvo a dos hijas, por lo cual el árbol queda así:
Tronco: Juan de Aguilar
Hermanas: Lucía de Aguilar y Antonia de Aguilar

Da. Lucía de Aguilar tuvo a María Vázquez del Alconcher; ésta tuvo a Gertrudis Capacete. Da. Gertrudis Capacete fue madre de Manuel Capacete

Da. Antonia de Aguilar tuvo a María de Isla Araiza y Telles de Aguilar (no es la misma que la esposa de Juan de Araiza y Medina). Pero es la misma que casó con Nicolás López Buezo, hijo a su vez de Nicolás López Buezo y Nicolasa Guerreo y Ocón. Ahora, María de Isa Araiza y Tellez de Aguilar tuvo a por lo menos dos hijas con Nicolás López Bueso: Da. Francisca López Bueso (casada con Ramon García Lascano); y la otra hija fue Manuela López Buezo (casada casada con Nicolás Muños de Pamplona), padres de Sebastiana de Pamplona Lopez Buezo, la presensa de la dispensa.

Por otro lado tengo a Juan de Aguilar Solorzano casado con Luisa de Araiza y Medina con quien tuvo 9 hijos en Aguascalientes (pero ninguna de sus hijas con Luisa se llamaban Lucía o Antonia). Pero bien, pero ésto nos lleva a Aguascalientes.

Allí tengo a Fernando de Araiza teniendo a un hijo en 1660 con Antonia Telles de Aguilar. Ésto último me da a mi la certeza de que éste Fernando en el Hernando de Araiza quien es el hijo de Juan de Araiza y Medina y María de Isla González Lozano, nacido en 1637:

It's been a while since I started this thread. For the past couple of years I've been collecting clues and I think I'm closer to establishing the link between Nicolas Lopez-Buezo (cc Nicolasa Guerrero de Ocon) and his possible father Andres Lopez-Buezo (cc Ana de Munguia y Escobar).

While no document has yet surfaced that clearly shows that Nicolas is the son of Andres and Ana, there are some clues that help figure this out. The first clue is the dispensa that has already been mentioned before between Nicolas Lopez de Buezo y Guerrero and Maria de Araiza Isla y Aguilar:

Dispensa Matrimonial de Nicolas Lopez de Buezo y Maria de Araiza y Isla (Tecolotlan, Jalisco, Mexico - 3 Agosto, 1681)

Unfortunately, the dispensa doesn't (clearly) state how the consanguinity applies to the bride and groom. It's only mentions that the "bisabuelas" of the bride and groom were sisters. If we look at the parents of those involved, they are:

Nicolas is the son of Nicolas Lopez de Buezo and Nicolasa Guerrero de Ocon
Maria de Araiza Islas y Aguilar is the daughter of Hernando/Fernando de Araiza Medina y Isla and Antonia Telles de Aguilar y Quevedo

Let's pretend that the Nicolas Lopez de Buezo cc Nicolasa Guerrero de Ocon was indeed the son of Andres Lopez de Buezo and Ana de Munguia Escobar, then we know Andres came from Spain. Ana de Munguia Escobar was the daugther of Hernando de Munguia and Isabel de Escobar as mentioned in the "Demanda de la Santa Inquisicion" I mentioned earlier in this thread. Isabel de Escobar is afflilated with the Ruiz Galindo-Escobar family as she's the niece of Francisco Ruiz Galindo also mentioned in the Inquisition document. So, the supposed family tree for the groom in the above dispensa would be the following:

Tronco: Familia Ruiz Galindo y Escobar
Isabel de Escobar cc Hernando de Munguia
Ana de Munguia Escobar cc Andres Lopez de Buezo
Nicolas Lopez de Buezo y Munguia cc Nicolasa Guerrero de Ocon
Nicolas Lopez de Buezco y Guerrero

Now for the bride it's mentioned that her parents were Fernando de Araiza Medina and Antonia Telles de Aguilar y Quevedo. The "parentesco" is unlikely to come from the Araiza Medina side of the family because there was no dispensa called for or needed in the following marriage:

Matrimonio de Juan de Araiza Medina y Castillo y Ana Lopez de Buezo y Guerrero (Tecolotlan, Jalisco, Mexico - 3 Octubre 1691)

In this marriage, Juan was the son of Juan de Araiza Medina y Islas and Maria del Castillo. Ana Lopez de Buezo y Guerrero was the daughter of Nicolas Lopez de Buezo and Nicolasa Guerrero de Ocon.

So, between these two documents we know that the parentesco from the dispensa above is NOT through the Araiza Medina. That means that the bride's parentesco has to come from her mother Antonia Telles de Aguilar y Quevedo. Antonia Telles de Aguilar y Quevedo was the daughter of Juan de Aguilar Solorzano and Mariana Telles de Herrera y Quevedo. I know this because Hernando and Antonia, aside from being the parents of Maria de Araiza y Isla, they were the parents of a priest named Juan de Ariaza Medina y Aguilar. Here's his information when he filed the necessary paperwork to start his religious life:

Moribus et Vita del Br. Juan de Araiza Medina y Aguilar (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico 1688)

In that information, the witnesses confirm that Antonia Telles de Aguilar y Quevedo was the daughter of Juan de Aguilar Solorzano and one of his two wives, i.e. his first wife Mariana Telles de Herrera y Quevedo.

Aside from the above document, we can reference another where Br. Juan de Araiza Medina collected on a "capellania" established by Andres Martinez de Quevedo, brother of Juan's great-grandfather Antonio Martinez de Quevedo. In this capellania, we discover that Mariana Telles de Herrera y Quevedo (cc Juan de Aguilar Solorzano) was the daughter of Antonio Martinez de Quevedo and Mariana Telles de Herrera:

With this we now have a better idea of Antonia Telles de Aguilar y Quevedo's maternal roots:

Mariana Telles de Herrera y Quevedo cc Juan de Aguilar Solorzano

This Quevedo/Telles de Aguilar doesn't seem to lead to any possible connections to the Ruiz Galindo/Escobar tronco I mentioned before. Given this, we now need to focus on Juan de Aguilar Solorzano's ancestry. This is a bit tough given that Juan de Aguilar Solorzano (married twice, first to Mariana Telles de Herrera y Quevedo and then to Luisa de Araiza Medina y Islas). Per all the information I found related to Juan, it seems that he was a resident of Sayula, Jalisco when he was married to Mariana Telles de Herrera y Quevedo. When he married Luisa de Araiza Medina, he became a resident of Aguascalientes. In Sayula, there indeed was an Aguilar Solorzano family that lived there in the early 1600s. That was the family of Francisco de Aguilar Solorzano cc Ana Ruiz Galindo. We know this based on some of his children:

Matrimonio de Francisco de Aguilar Solorzano y Ruiz y Isabel de la Cruz Rodriguez (Cajitlan, Colima, Mexico - 31 Enero, 1661)
Moribus et Vita del Br. Nicolas de Aguilar Solorzano y Ruiz (Sayula, Jalisco, Mexico - 22 Septiembre, 1649)

In the information for Br. Nicolas de Aguilar Solorzano, we find out that his father Francisco was the son Captain Juan de Aguilar Solorzano - resident of Colima, Colima, Mexico. We also find out that Francisco had a brother who was a priest named Alvaro de Aguilar Solorzano and that this family's roots were in Colima. No further information is mentioned about this family nor do we find any further information on the Ruiz Galindo side of the family. I have seen some family trees reference Ana Ruiz Galindo as including the last name of Escobar. Let's suppose that's true and we go back to the dispensa mentioned above between Nicolas and Maria. The family tree for the Maria de Araiza Islas y Aguilar would looke like the following:

Tronco: Ruiz Galindo y Escobar
Ana Ruiz Galindo cc Francisco de Aguilar Solorzano
Juan de Aguilar Solorzano cc Mariana Telles de Herrera y Quevedo
Antonia Telles de Herrera y Quevedo cc Fernando de Araiza Medina y Islas
Maria de Araiza Islas y Aguilar

In conclusion the "parentesco" between Nicolas and Maria is most likely on the Ruiz Galindo/Escobar side and it would also confirm that Andres Lopez Buezo cc Ana de Munguia Escobar were the parents of Nicolas Lopez de Buezo cc Nicolasa Guerrero de Ocon.

I'll continue to search for more clues/documents that confirm this with 100% certainty but it seems that early 1600s documents for the early provinces of Avalos, Amula, Autlan, etc. are sparse. I'm looking through the Notarial archives of Guadalajara to see if I can find any further clues as I know Ana Ruiz Galindo cc Francisco de Aguilar Solorzano established a capellania around 1649 or so when Francisco died (I couldn't find any capellania however, but I didn't look too closely)

I find you suggestions very interesting. I do have a question though. Reading both the Vita e Moribus of Juan de Araiza Medina Aguilar and the Capellania of Andres de Quevedo, I was not able to corroborate who the mother of Antonia Téllez de Aguilar Solórzano y Quevedo is. I did find her father, as Juan de Aguilar Solórzano and that he was married twice, once to Luisa de Araiza, daughter of Juan de Araiza Medina I, and Maria de Isla Lozano. His second wife is the woman I cannot identify. It also clearly gives her grandfather as Antonio de Quevedo. Interestingly this testimony is given by Francisco de Velasco y Zúñiga, who says he was married to a Luisa de Quevedo, and I think was probably the same one as was later married to Elvira de Guzmán.

Thank you for your reply Sergio. Unfortunately, I don't have a link to a document that clearly states the name of Juan de Aguilar Solorzano's first wife. Witnesses in the capellania did confirm that Juan de Aguilar was married twice. It's inferred given that Juan and Mariana had a child named Pedro de Aguilar Solorzano who married twice (1st to Gertrudis de Araiza Medina and second to Ana Diaz de Corona). Aside from that no other clue/document states Mariana's name as Juan's first wife.

I am continuing to try to trace these lines with you and confirm what you have found by comparing to the primary sources I have.

The link you give for the Vita e Moribus of Nicolás de Aguilar Solórzano seems like is the same one for the Info Matrimonial for Francisco de Aguilar listed above. Could you please repost the link only for the Vita e Moribus?

I also wanted to thank you, because I had been searching for the ordination papers of Lic. Juan de Araiza Medina y Aguilar, and you did! He was a priest in the 1690s in Autlan and I had been trying to figure out how he fit into the picture to my ancestor Juan de Araiza y Medina Guzmán (?-1665). Interestingly his parents Fernando/Hernando de Araiza y Medina Lozano and Antonia Telles de Aguilar Solórzano y Quevedo had a first son Juan who died in infancy. But your vita y moribus proves they had two different Juans. This is the first

Very quick question(before I try to post some more clues on the Ruiz Galindo line). On image 306 of the Vita e Moribus of Nicolás de Aguilar Solórzano, it gives his paternal grandfather as Cap. Juan de Aguilar Solórzano from the city of Colima. But the third witness also says that he knew "Fulano Galindo" maternal grandfather of Nicolás. Do you think this was his actual name, or more likely a fill-in name, but that his last name was Galindo? In modern Spanish, people will say "conocí a fulano de tal" which in English would be equivalent to "I knew so and so." Thoughts?

Dear Daniel,
I can contribute a few things the Ruiz Galindo puzzle. There (as usual) appear to be multiple people (at least 3) with the same name around the same time.
In 1691 a Juan Ruiz Galindo (C) presented a marriage request along with his future father in Law Nicolás Caro y Rentería to marry Caro´s daughter María Caro y Rentería.

The interesting thing about this, is that I already had both of them in my tree and had found their marriage, but could not prove who the parents were. Now we know. This document gives this Juan Ruiz Galindo’s parents as Antonio Ruiz Galindo and Sebastiana de la Campa, from Zapotitlán. I did not know about this older couple. Juan Ruiz Galindo (C ) also gives his age as 26, which places his birth around 1665. Unfortunately, it looks like Zapotitlán does not have older records, so that I likely a dead end wihtou other documents housed in Guadalajara (which is always possible).

Second, in an older capellanía document, from 1678, Juana Corona, daughter of Hernán González Corona and Inés de Tapia y Aguayo, and widow of yet another Juan Ruiz Galindo (A) (?-1678 ) made a capellanía.

In it we learn of several of their children: Juan Ruiz Galindo (B) (image 182), Francisco Ruiz Galindo (image 181), Sebastian Ruiz Galindo (image 184), a brother in law Antonio Ruiz Galindo (and therefore brother of her dead husband Juan). I believe it is this Antonio Ruiz Galindo, brother in law to Juana that is the father of the Juan Ruiz Galindo (C ) mentioned, married to Maria Caro y Rentería. I have found the marriage of this Juan Ruiz Galindo (A) and Juana Corona in Autlan 1 Jul 1647. This would probably make them both be born at the latest in the 1630s, but possibly in the 1620s.

Finally, the last document I have to offer is the will of Juan Ruiz Galindo y Corona (B) in 1701.

Thank you very much for sharing this information Sergio. It does indeed help to untangle some of the Ruiz Galindo web. We're missing a lot of early information on this family. There certainly is a lack of records for Zapotitlan, Tuxcacuesco, Sayula, etc. which is where they appear to have lived and baptized their children.

I have found a couple of interesting tidbits I'd like to share:

There was a couple in Autlan that baptized their children around the 1660s and 1670s: Juan Tello de Grajeda (Tello de Sandoval y Grajeda) cc Mariana Corona (who sometimes used the surname of Ruiz de Castro). The parents of Mariana appear to be Diego Gonzalez de Corona cc Mariana Ruiz Galindo. The "Castro" is certainly interesting and might be a clue as to the earlier roots of the Ruiz Galindo family.

I also found an index listing pertaining to a Santo Oficio document where a person by the name of "Luis Galindo de Escobar" was interviewed by the Santo Oficio in Sayula on 11/27/1624:

Unfortunately, the document was not microfilmed so I can't see what was said/recorded. However, it's a clue that the Ruiz Galindo lived in Sayula, in the early 1600s. I'll keep sharing info as I find it.

Sobre la familia Arce son de Tepetitlán, Hidalgo. Pero realmente no he estudiado esa genealogía.

Doña María de Sosa y Castilla desciende del gobernador de las Islas Canarias, Don Lope de Sosa, también desciende de la casa real de Castilla.

Hay un genealogista llamado Jesús Mendoza Muñoz que ha estudiado la migración de las familias conquistadoras de la Sierra Gorda de Querétaro. En su libro La fundación de Peñamiller en la Sierra Gorda de Querétaro. Tiene al final un capítulo sobre las familias que obtuvieron más territorios.

2. Capitán Juan (Sánchez) de Orduña casado con doña Leonor Sosa y Castilla. Tenía 126 sitios de estancia para ganado, provenientes de la herencia de un pariente. Era regidor de la ciudad de México

María de Orduña Sosa y Castilla casó con Íñigo de Guevara Altamirano (enfermizo) y al morir éste (al parecer sin sucesión)se volvió a casar con el maestre de Campo Francisco Guerrero de Ardila, quien sirvió antes en Filipinas y luego en Michoacán con extensa riqueza en Tepetitlán y fueron padres del contador Gabriel Guerro de Ardila. Conquistador de la Sierra Gorda además de dos hijos adoptivos y tres hijas de crianza.

Diego de Orduña Sosa y Castilla, manejaba la herencia de María que ascendía a 40 mil pesos pagando los réditos. Al morir María su viudo vendió muchos sitios de estancia por lo complicado de su administración.

Resultó muy interesante que haya tenido antes otro marido y otra descendencia.

La ascendencia de la familia Sosa podría ser así:

In the case of this ancestor, “Sacramento” is part of her given name, “Maria Prudencia del Sacramento,” which is likely a name of one of the manifestations of the Virgin. So, the “d” in “del” is not capitalized. Her surname is “Rangel.”

I never saw this post. There is a definite interest in this website online. My background is in PR/Marketing and Media. I think the real reason is people are not getting the messages.

You might get more eyes on this if you create a simple Youtube video about the content of Nuestros Ranchos. There is a HUGE genealogical community on Youtube looking for just this sort of content. You might want to consider setting up an account on there just to advertise for this website. The money you make in views will pay for the website etc.. I can help you with target ideas that will get people to click on your video to generate support. Generally speaking you can launch with topics that are most well known like maybe Cortez and his family tree. Then if people want to watch more they can come here for more details into the family and it's research.

Also if money is a problem with maintaining the website Wix and a few others have websites that are free to access. They have free templates etc. I don't think anyone wants this website to go down EVER. Facebook is already on its last legs so this is an invaluable resource of information for families who still care and carry the torch for our ancestors who are no longer here. If we do not do it who will?

Yes Jorge your donation to the upgrade the website effort has arrived. I'm currently at 19 participants and need 11 other individuals to contribute to reach my minimum of 30 members contributing at least 10 dollars. Pedro Benito’s youngest son was Alonso Benito, who was married to Isabel Lopez. Here is their marriage record, dated 22 Aug 1584, in Mexico City. It names his parents as Pedro Benito and Magdalena Gonzalez, residents of Zacatecas and both deceased, and hers as Gaspar Lopez and Ynes Vasquez, residents of Mexico City, also deceased. According to Pedro Benito’s testamento, Alonso was one of his natural children, so he and Magdalena Gonzalez were not married. And we don’t know if she was the mother of his other children. But at least we have another piece of the puzzle!
Alonso Benito and Isabel baptized their daughter, Maria, on 6 Jun 1585 in Mexico City. As an adult, she used the name Maria Vasquez Benito, and she married Juan de Arteaga, a native of Arrigorriaga, Vizcaya, Pais Vasco. Here’s her carta de dote, dated Jan 1605.
Alonso Benito and Isabel Lopez had another daughter, named Leonor Benito Lopez, but I don’t know what became of her.
Alonso Benito died before 8 Aug 1597, in the Villa de Jerez. On that date, Isabel Lopez was already a widow, when she gave power of attorney to his brother, Pedro Benito.

Great work Manny. I love the story of how you found this information. Sometimes, many times luck comes into play in finding information. Many times I have been working hard and have made little progress, when suddenly for one reason or other I luckily run into something that I had been unsuccessfully looking for previously in another investigations. And some of my biggest finds have been when I take a break from my projects and research on other people that I had not previously not known had any connection to my work. Just this past week, i did research on the two subjects of last weeks “finding your roots”, Mario Lopez and Melissa Villaseñor. I was able to connect him to the Zacatecas/Jalisco D’Avila family.

Please keep up your excellent work. Hopefully soon we can get into another debate on our difference of opinions on our Estrada ancestry. I still think that your research finds have helped my conclusion that they do descend from King Ferdinand “El catolico” of Aragon.

MORE ABOUT THE DESCENDANTS OF PEDRO BENITO

This saga continues, and there’s even an added twist.

Antonio de San Martin died before 16 Jan 1599, when his children and heirs gave power of attorney to their mother, Mari Gonzalez, so that she could sell all his assets and properties in las Minas de los Zacatecas. This included a hacienda with its dwellings and foundries and livestock, as well as mines and mine shares. Though I haven’t seen the testamento of Antonio de San Martin, I suppose he named his children as his universal heirs, and that each was to receive an equal share, which is probably why they decided to hold an estate sale, so they could divvy up the receipts. The children named on this document are: Isabel Parraga (already married to Geronimo de Cabrera), Beatriz de San Martin 30, Antonia de San Martin 15, Mariana de San Martin 12, Agueda de San Martin 8, and brothers Alonso, Manuel and Antonio de San Martin, all minors (under the age of 25). After marrying, all of their daughters would adopt either the surname “Parraga” or “Sosa.” I don’t know the origins of these surnames.

On 12 Nov 1600, before the public scribe of San Luis Potosi, Pedro Benito declared that, some 14 years before, in the city of Zacatecas, as one of four heirs of Pedro Benito, his now-deceased father, he sold his quarter share of his father’s inheritance to his brother-in-law, Antonio de San Martin, for the amount of 1,000 pesos, for which he presented him with a bill of sale. Since then, Antonio de San Martin had died, and the bill of sale had been lost. And now, Mari Gonzalez, the widow of Antonio de San Martin, as guardian and curator of their minor children and heirs, was requesting a copy. So Pedro Benito asked the scribe to notarize a new bill of sale in the amount of 1,000 pesos.
Something that caught my attention in this document, is when he said that he was “one of four” heirs of his father, Pedro Benito. But according to his father’s probate papers, there were only three heirs: Pedro Benito, Mari Gonzalez and Alonso Benito. I thought this was curious.

And then I came upon the following document: on 13 May 1596, appearing before Juan de Savala, Teniente de Justicia Mayor, was Leonor Gonzalez, the wife of Juan Gutierrez. She said that, as it was public knowledge, several days previous, her husband had left on the expedition to New Mexico, and as such, he won’t be back for some time. Therefore, she asked the Teniente to grant her permission to grant power of attorney to whomever she saw fit, so that they could sell some mines that she owned in the Mines of Fresnillo, so that she could sustain herself and her children. Once she received permission, Leonor Gonzalez granted power to Luis Hernandez de Celada, resident of la Ciudad de Nuestra Señora de los Zacatecas, so that he, in her name, could sell “mines and shares of mines that she owns in las Minas de Fresnillo, that belonged to her father, PEDRO BENITO, from whom she inherited them.”
There’s the missing fourth heir: Leonor Gonzalez! It’s odd that she’s not mentioned in Pedro Benito’s probate papers, but only a portion of his testamento was included.
Most interesting is her husband, Juan Gutierrez: he was obviously a member of the Juan de Oñate expedition. I checked some documents from that jornada, but only soldiers are listed, and of those, the only Gutierrez’s were Juan Gutierrez Bocanegra and his son, Antonio Gutierrez Bocanegra. Unless he married twice, I don’t think this is the same Juan Gutierrez.
But on that same list - which was dated Dec 1597 - there was also a soldier named Pedro de San Martin, son of Antonio de San Martin, born in Zacatecas, age 25 (b. 1572). Though I can’t say with complete certainty that his father was the same Antonio de San Martin married to Mari Gonzalez, the time line and location are right, and it would make sense that they’d have a son named “Pedro,” it being the name of Mari Gonzalez’s father.

Either way, this document now links this family to another historical event, making it three: the De Soto Expedition, the founding of San Luis Potosi, and the colonization of New Mexico.

Rick - yup, serendipity does come into play a lot in this work. When first reading the third document above, I was surprised as heck to see Pedro Benito’s name, since I had no reason to think that Leonor Gonzalez was his daughter - I was only intrigued by finding someone linked to the Oñate expedition. And that led me to finding another probable child for Antonio de San Martin. By the way, I didn’t realize that we were debating re: the Estrada thread. I was only posting documents that I had found, and hadn’t yet formed an opinion, one way or another. But I did find some new info, a while back, that’s changed all that. I tell you what: I’ve got some down time, I’ll throw something together and post in the coming days.

Dispensa matrimonial entre Juan Manuel de Bejar y Josefa de la Cueva y Diaz

Josefa de la Cueva is the daughter of Sebastian de la Cueva y Villasenor cc Juana Diaz y Picaso. Juan Manuel's deceased wife was Juana de Anaya who is said to be a 2nd/3rd cousin of Josefa de la Cueva y Villasenor. The relationship is through their Villasenor side. Juana de Anya is said to have been a daughter of Jose de Anaya, "primo hermano" de Maria de Villasenor y Lomeline (wife of Francisco de la Cueva y Lomelin, parents of Sebastian de la Cueva). I suspect that the parents of Jose de Anaya (Father of Juana de Anaya, Juan Manuel's deceased wife) was the son of Jose de Corona Anaya cc Leonicia de Orozco Villasenor. Add this to the dispensa between Diego de Villasenor y Lomelin and Ines de la Cueva y Villasenor and we have a general idea about which Villasenor lines are involved.

If this dispensa says that Jose de Anaya and Maria de Villasenor were first cousins... and we assume that the Jose de Anaya is a son of Jose de Corona Anaya cc Leonicia de Orozco Villasenor, the relationship looks like this:

1st degree: Juana de Anaya
2nd degree: Jose de Anaya
3rd degree: Leonicia de Orozco Villasenor cc Jose de Anaya Corona
4th degree: Miguel de Villasenor Orozco cc Maria Bocanegra de Figueroa y Banuelos

In the other dispensa between Diego and Ines de la Cueva are said to be related in the 3rd degree. On this we have:

1st degree: Diego de Villasenor Figueroa y Delgadillo
2nd degree: Jose de Villasenor Orozco y Figueroa cc Maria Delgadillo
3rd degree: Miguel de Villasenor Orozco cc Maria Bocanegra de Figueroa y Banuelos

So the Maria de Villasenor y Lomelin cc Francisco de la Cueva y Lomelin is closely related to Miguel de Villasenor Orozco cc Maria Bocanegra de Figueroa y Banuelos.

I found a record of one of my ancestors from Zacoalco de Torres, and it looks like the surname was spelled Alsalde. I'm starting to think this was just a typo in the Church marriage certificate because I can't find any information on her. Juana de "Alsalde", married to Miguel de Castro, mother of Patricio de Castro. The document I found was actually Patricio's marriage certificate and that's how his mother's name is spelled. Could it be that her last name was Asalde or Ansaldo?

Welcome to the group. I haven't found Anzaldos in my family tree, but I also have several surnames in or around Santa Catarina: Apodaca, Gomez, Urena, Castro, Cervantes, Salazar, Meza, Moreno, Bonal. Do any of them match your tree?

If my research is correct, Pedro Castaneda and Maria Candelaria Ulloa are my 6th great grandparents. Thank you for your nice comment. I think that María Candelaria Ulloa is not the last Ulloa on your tree, since it is confirmed that her parents were Nicolás de Ulloa and María de Muñoz, so they are the last ones :)

Who of María Candelaria's children is your ancestor? I have four sons registered. Nicolás Alexandro, Francisco, Joseph Manuel and Buenaventura. My ancestor is Joseph Manuel. His godmother was Melchora Marqués de los Olivos, so I think that there is a probability that his great-grandfather could be Nicolás de Ulloa (Marqués de los Olivos). I hope to find more evidence.

If my research is correct, Manuel Castaneda is my direct ancestor as well. I have him married to Antonia de la Torre.
Then it goes to their son, Vicente Ferrer, married to Maria Lugarda de Aro (2nd marriage) but this tree has not been easy for me.

Oh yes, Joseph Manuel Castaneda was married to Antonia de la Torre, who is a direct descendant of the converted Sephardic Jew Pedro Pacho, who was one of the conquerors of Nueva Galicia. Their son Vicente Castaneda and his wife María Lugarda de Aro are also my ancestors, then it goes to their son Luis Castanedo, married to Benita Ochoa.

Yes, I agree with you. Those spelling variants are common. Vicente Ferrer was a Saint from Valencia, Spain, and the names Carmen and Carmel are at times used interchangeably.

Confusion Pico/Rico en Michoacan

Algunas ramas de la familia estan emparentadas con Pio Pico (el ultimo gobernador mexicano en la Alta California antes de ser apropiado por EEUU, por el lado Verdugo,) y otros de nosotros con su esposa, Maria Ignacia Alvarado (por el lado Collins/Robinson/etc.)

Uno de los topes con que me he encontrado es el apellido de Rico: Aparece una sola vez en la rama Gomez (via el abuelo Carlos Gomez); pero investigando a los Pico me doy cuenta que los Pico tambien provienen de Michoacan.

En un instante de inspiracion, me he preguntado si en algun momento no habra habido una confusion con los nombres Pico y Rico.

Efectivamente los Pico parecen ser mas populares que los Rico en esta area de Mexico.
No se si sea util investigar mas a los Pico de Michoacan, pero ahi se los paso al costo.

Hi Manny, I think if i remember Juan de Malaber was the second husband of Marta Sanchez de Mendoza. But it's been a long time since I looked at these families. So when it says "su nieta" for Beatriz Gomez aka Sanchez I think they just don't know how to describe the relationship of Juan de Malaber. Technically Beatriz Sanchez/Gomez would be the step-granddaughter, if that's even a thing. Based on the multiple names Beatriz Sanchez/Gomez uses and since we know she is the actual granddaughter of Marta Sanchez de Mendoza, we can reasonable assume that her actual grandfather is Juan Sanchez de Lara. Juan de Malaber i think may be discussed in this thread:

I have a question about Beatriz Sanchez. If she's the granddaughter of Marta Sanchez de Mendoza, does that mean she's the daughter of Maria Sanchez? Also I was wondering if you were familiar with Francisco Sanchez de Quezada, son of Lazaro Sanchez and grandson of Maria Sanchez. If Maria Sanchez is the mother of Beatriz Sanchez then she would be the sibling of Lazaro Sanchez. So my question is where does Sanchez de Quezada come from. It appears to come from Lazaro Sanchez since Lazaro's wife's parents are known. Was Maria Sanchez married to a Quezada or descend from a Quezada? I do know one of Maria Sanchez's children uses Ornelas but where does Quezada come from?

That’s a really good point. It reminds of what Jaime Holcombe revealed, regarding how everyone assumed that the Delgadillo’s descended from Juan de Renteria, when they descended from his wife Ysabel Calderon’s first husband, Diego Delgadillo.

I thread through this thread and was impressed with the amount of research that you have done with to expand our knowledge on this line and all others who have contributed thus far. I must state that I am related to this line on numerous lines, but do share a close tie through the Méndez de Torres of Zamora, Michoacán.

D. Baltazar de Avalos y Tovar and Da. Juana Ruiz de Aldana had another daughter named Da. Catalina de Avalos y Aldana (based on the various baptismal records she appears as madrina in Santa María de los Lagos and is listed as their daughter) who married D. Balthazar Martín-Barragán y Arias de Bedoya, probably in Zamora or Santa María de los Lagos, I still have yet to locate this record, if it exists. They had the following (so far what I have found):

1. Teresa Martín Barragán y Avalos b.- 7 June 1651 in San Martín de Zamora
2. Micaela Martín Barragán y Avalos b. - 19 Oct 1653 in San Martín de Zamora
3. Juana Martín Barragán y Avalos b. 11 Aug 1655 in San Martín de Zamora
4. José Martín Barragán y Avalos b. 14 Dec 1656 in Santa María de los Lagos

As you can see the family moved sometime between Juana and José's birth to Catalina de Avalos native town of Santa María de los Lagos, present day Lagos de Moreno. I want to draw your attention to their oldest daughter Teresa. She married my eighth great grand uncle's son, D. Diego Méndez de Torres y Ochoa Garibay de Solís, who was a "comerciante" on 27 April 1677 in Aguascalientes. The marriage record does not state Diego's parents, but through other records in León, Guanajuato, I was able to establish the identity of his parents of which I shouted for joy as I soon learned who he was. The couple had at least one daughter Da. Francisca Méndez de Torres y Martín Barragán, baptized 19 Oct 1679 in nearby León, Guanajuato.

Diego's father (my eighth granduncle) D. Diego Méndez de Torres (also Méndez de Sotomayor) y Arias de Bedoya was Alcalde Provisional de León al estado noble y su jurisdicción, until his death, by then he had already remarried and brought all his children to León, leaving the "solar familiar" of Zamora, Michoacán to take on expanded responsibilities in the Cabildo of León. As soon as the children are of age they are married into the García de León, Zúñiga y Mendoza, Vargas Machuca, Salceda Andrade, López de Lara and the Martín Barragán families. I call it very strategic marriage planning as the majority of these families were either directly or indirectly involved with the Cabildo through business or marriages. Over the summer, I finally got a chance to thoroughly read the 1657 causa criminal of Juan and Aparisio de Avalos, and boy! did I get some things wrong: Nicolas Garcia and his brother, Gaspar Garcia, were not captured, and they managed to escape. That's how they are able to appear in Huaniqueo in 1660, and later, in Lagos, where they were finally arrested. They were then extradited to San Luis Potosi; on 7 Aug 1665, Capp Juan Antonio de Pro, Alcalde Provincial de la Sta Hermandad de la Nueva Galicia, delivers Nicolas Garcia de Avalos, Gaspar y Juan de Avalos sus hermanos, y Juan Perez y Felipe de la Cruz Mulatos Libres. I lose the scent there. Gaspar de Avalos father was not among those arrested.

This reinforces Baltasar de Avalos Tovar's & Juana Ruiz de Aldana's presence in Zamora, along with the marriage of their son, Nicolas de Avalos to Ynes Martinez Ortega, on 21 Aug 1651.

GRABIEL DE ABALOS & ALONSO DAVALOS LUDENA

It’s been a while since I’ve found anything on our favorite gangsta family, los Malos Davalos. I found this one in the Guadalajara Protocolos; it’s a promissory note, dated 21 Oct 1637, in Villa de Lagos: Grabiel de Abalos (how he signed his name), vecino desta Villa (Lagos), as principal debtor, and Alº Davalos Ludena (how he signed his name), as his guarantor, promises to pay Esteban de Anda Altamirano 94 pesos and 4 tomines in Reales, for the same amount loaned to him.

The last time we saw Grabiel de Abalos was 1 Jan 1630, in San Matias, Pinos, when his slave, Maria Negra Adulta, was baptized (her padrinos were Sebastian Perez and Luisa, Negros Esclavos de Luis de Urdiales). If he is the same Gabriel de Avalos who married Agustina de Velasco, then he next appears on 26 Jul 1639, in San Luis Potosi, when they baptize Nicolas.

As for Alonso Davalos Ludena, I don’t know of any other Alonso de Avalos living in Villa de Lagos in 1637, other than the one married to Catarina de Orozco, and who we know was brother of Gaspar de Abalos. If it is him, “Ludena” is a new surname for this branch. I wonder if there is any link to Maria de Ludena/Luduina/Ludueña, who married Rodrigo de Ornelas y Mendoza, 26 Nov 1615, in Lagos, and who died, 19 Dec 1674, in Jalos? Does anyone know who she is? From the timeline, she could easily be a sibling of the Avalos’.

It's a been awhile since I looked at these families. But I thought we had all basically decided they were brothers -Gaspar, Gabriel, Alonso and others. Was I wrong? The only mention I found of Maria de Ludena is this passage I think from Rodolfo Hernandez Chavez, where Gaspar is identified as Gaspar de Avalos Ludena:

Gaspar de Avalos-Ludeña casado por 1620 con Doña Luisa de Quesada y Sánchez de Mendoza, hermana de Doña María de Quesada ó María de Mendoza; Doña Juana de Avalos, madre de Juan de Orozco que casó con María de Quesada y Alvarado, hija de Francisco de Quesada y Sánchez de Mendoza –hermano de Doña María y de Doña Luisa de Quesada-, y de su esposa Catalina de los Ángeles Alvarado; Doña Ysabel Avalos-Ludeña / “Ysabel de Orozco”, esposa de Don Sebastián Pérez de Ortega; y a caso Doña María de Ludeña, casada en Patzcuaro y, velada el 26 de Noviembre de 1615 en Lagos con Rodrigo de Órnelas y Mendoza… ¿Tal vez?, debamos de incluir como hijo de Alonso de Avalos y de Catalina de Orozco, a Francisco de Avalos, esposo de María de Espitia, quien según investigaciones de Don Jaime Holcombe procreó en Beatriz Sánchez de Lara –también conocida como Beatriz Sánchez de Carranza, Beatriz Sánchez de Mendoza ó Beatriz Gómez propietaria de una casa en la Villa de los Lagos, descrita en el padrón de 669 como “Casa de María Gómez Viuda”, donde vivía Antonia de Avalos doncella, en compañía de Bernarda Ortiz doncella, y de la “Estancia de San Nicolás de la Ciénega” en la jurisdicción de San Juan/Jalostotitlán, registrada en los padrones de 1670 como “Rancho de Beatriz Gómez”, y en los de 1672, 1673 y 1679 como “Estancia de Beatriz Gómez”,

We’ve documented that Gaspar, Juan & Alonso were brothers, Gabriel & Sebastian were brothers, and Baltasar and Juana were siblings; we know that Gaspar, Alonso, Gabriel and Sebastian and their families all had contact with each other, and that Gaspar and Gabriel appear to shadow each other in their movements between Lagos, Pinos, Armadillo and Irapuato. Also, none of their children nor grandchildren intermarried, and we’ve seen only 3 dispensations for great-grandchildren. As for being certain whether all 7 were in the same family group, we still can’t say, but they were definitely at least cousins.

Thanks for reposting Rodolfo’s piece, I had forgotten about that. I’ve been foraging through the Lagos de Moreno church records, and I’ve found something that ties into that: Rodrigo de Ornelas and Maria de Ludeña appear as padrinos for 3 baptisms in 1637, and on the partidas she is given the name “Maria de Avalos.” We already have Alonso de Avalos using “Ludeña” - I’d like to see Rodolfo’s sources, with Gabriel using that surname, as well as Ysabel de Avalos cc Sebastian Perez de Ortega.

On 17 Nov 1665, in Jalostotitlan, buried was Beatriz de Montoya, wife of Gaspar de Avalos el Mozo. She was a resident of the estansia called Ornelas in San Juan.

There were 3 men named Gaspar, associated with these lines: Gaspar de Avalos cc Luisa de Quesada, their son, Gaspar Garcia de Avalos (b 19 Sep 1639), and Gaspar, son of Baltasar de Avalos cc Juana Ruiz de Aldana (b. 6 Jul 1636). This last one used the name “Gaspar de Aldana” in later records, and appears in the 1672 & 1673 San Juan padrones. The 1st Gaspar and his son were in Lagos de Moreno as early as May 1664, when daughter Andrea married Roque Flores. Ana de Montoya could’ve been married to either 3, and Beatriz to either of the younger ones. Anyone?

NICOLAS GARCIA DE AVALOS

Buried on 10 Dec 1665 in Lagos de Moreno was Nicolas Garcia de Avalos. If you remember, Nicolas was the oldest son of Gaspar de Avalos and Luisa de Quezada. He started using the alias “Garcia,” as early as 23 Feb 1654, when he married Ysabel del Castillo in Armadillo. I don’t know if it is an ancestral surname, though his brother, Gaspar, also used it. I was surprised to see him buried in Lagos, because the last we had heard of him was the previous Aug 1665, when he and his brothers Gaspar & Juan were extradited to San Luis Potosi, probably for those murders and robberies committed in 1656. Looks like his sentence was carried out in Lagos, since the burial record says he was “justiciado” (executed). Here’s something I had overlooked: Gaspar de Avalos & Luisa de Quezada’s daughter, Ysabel de Avalos, married Geronimo de Arroyo in 1647 in Pinos. On their 1646 IM, the first witness was Nicolas de Ribera, age 20, who said he was “primo hermano de la dicha Ysabel de Avalos.” So, either Gaspar de Avalos or Luisa de Quesada had a sibling who married a “Ribera”:

Regarding Beatriz Sanchez aka Gomez etc: on 21 Jun 1628, in Lagos de Moreno, baptized were Phelipe and Ana, both “hijos de la Yglesia,” and Antonio hijo de Alonso de Quesada cc Ysabel de Alarcon, and the padrinos for all 3 were Juan de Malaber and Beatriz Gomez “su nieta.” On 11 Jul 1628, baptized was Madalena hija de la Yglesia, her madrina was Beatriz Gomez “nieta de Marta Sanchez.”

I don’t know who Juan de Malaber was, but Marta Sanchez was married to Juan Sanchez de Lara. Could this possibly be the same Beatriz Gomez aka Beatriz Sanchez etc?

Hi, I´m new over here and even though I have already read a lot of the posts in this forum I didn´t read all.
So, does anybody notice that in the baptisma-chistening certificate (I really don´t know the english name)of GASPAR DE AVALOS (Lagos 6 july 1636), son of Baltazar de Avalos and Juana de Aldana, the godmother was Isabel de Avalos, daugther of Gabriel de Avalos.

Although, this document doesn´t prove they were brothers, it definitely proves that a link between them existed.

Aunque esto no prueba el parentesco entre ellos, sin duda si demuestra una relación de algún tipo entre ellos.

GASPAR DE AVALOS - Update

We last saw Gaspar de Avalos and Luisa de Quezada in March 1657, living on their rancho, called "El Ojo de Muerte," near Valle de Armadillo, SLP. Their sons, Nicolas Garcia and Gaspar Garcia, along with cousins, Juan and Geronimo Aparisio de Avalos Orozco, plus another accomplice, had just been tried and executed for murder & robbery. After their deaths, the condemned were decapitated and quartered, their heads placed on poles on the 4 roads leaving San Luis, and their bodies, gibbeted where the murders took place. Within days, the heads of Juan and Aparisio de Avalos had disappeared from their poles, and authorities had gone to the rancho of Gaspar de Avalos, searching for them. Gaspar and his sons were gone, and only the women remained. And that's where we left off.

Cut to 3 years later: it's 4 Feb, 1660, and Gaspar de Avalos and Luisa de Quezada are now residents of Huaniqueo, Michoacan, where they had been living for well over a year (since 1658). Alonso Rodriguez de Montemayor, of Pachuca, has petitioned to marry their daughter, Luisa de Avalos y Quezada (confirmed 22 May 1624, Sta Maria de Lagos), but there's an impediment (my heart jumped...): Alonso Rodriguez has had a previous relationship with a cousin of Luisa's, requiring a dispensation for 2o con 3o de amistad ilicita (!!GOOOOL!!).

Now, as I was reading this document, I was super impressed with the amount of information given by the notary - on the testigos, in particular: not just their castas and ages, but also, in some cases, their occupations, or who they're married to (Ysabel de Liebana Española de 50a, casada con Juan de Torres, vnos de Huaniqueo). And then, for the number of testigos, of which there are several, including a couple of surprises. I just hoped that the dispensation gives us something new, like Gaspar's parents' names, or perhaps confirming a link to Gabriel & Sebastian de Avalos, or to Baltasar & Juana de Avalos? Or a new branch, altogether?

Well, it appears to be the latter:

“dixo conosse a dho alonzo hernandes de montemayor dos messes y a luissa de abalos desde que nasio que es su hija lexitima y que cotidianamente hastado de baxo su obediencia y amparo como donssella birtuosa y que pueden contraer el matrimonio que an tratado y conossio a juo de abalos su herno lixitimo [hermano legitimo] que mataron en este puo [pueblo, i.e. Huaniqueo] y conossio a bartolome de abalos hijo bastardo de dho Juan de abalos el qual tubo una hija llamada maria con quien dho alonso hernandes dissen tubo amistad ylicita la qual fue sobrina de dha luisa de abalos su hija porque dho bartolome de abalos fue Primo de dha su hija y la hija de dho bartolome de abalos es sobrina de dha luissa de abalos su hija y que todo lo referrido lo bido y passo como esta dho y es la berdad … “ - Declaracion del padre de la contrayente, Gaspar de Abalos, edad de 60a, lo firmo con el sr cura, 22 feb 1660 (Image 079).

Yup. Gaspar de Abalos himself. Giving an account of a brother named Juan de Avalos, whom "they had killed in Huaniqueo" (years before, according to another testigo), and who had a bastard son named Bartolome de Avalos (Mestizo), who had a daughter named Maria de Avalos, with whom Alonso Rodriguez had relations. All of the witnesses give the same account, but there are some additional snippets of info:

- Testigo Juan de Yepes Esp 50 says Juan de Avalos Difunto was married to his aunt.
- Testigo Juan Sidbensiz (or Juan Bensisio - anyone?), Esp age 24, says he's a cuñado de Luisa de Avalos, who is sister of his wife. The only daughter of Gaspar de Avalos and Luisa de Quezada that I don't have married, is Mariana de Avalos, who was baptized 04 Jul 1638, in Sagrario, SLP.
- Several of the testigos say they knew the Avalos from Lagos, with none mentioning Armadillo nor Sierra de Pinos. Of course they wouldn't!!!
- The biggest surprise (and the creepiest...), is testigo NICOLAS GARCIA, age 30, brother of the bride. But how can this be?? Nicolas Garcia de Avalos was hung, beheaded and quartered, 3 years before, in San Luis Potosi!!?? The only explanation: one of the younger siblings adopted his name, after his death. This family was all about aliases and shadows.

So, now we know that after the executions, Gaspar de Avalos and Luisa de Quezada would have collected and buried the bodies of their sons, when the authorities allowed it. They were then likely forced to leave SLP, perhaps even forfeiting whatever property they owned. They still had 2 sons, under the age of 16, and 4 daughters, all of marrying age. Gaspar de Abalos & the OMG then headed south to Huaniqueo. We've seen them in Irapuato, Gto, but this is the first time we've placed anyone from this branch in old Michoacan. And now we know that he had a brother named Juan de Avalos, who lived & died there. This gets us that much closer to the Avalos/ Tobar/ Villasenor / Cervantes etc.

Additional notes:

- Daughter Andrea de Avalos still has to marry Roque Flores, on 02 May 1664, in Lagos. Women usually lived with their parents until married, though in her case, she was at least 40 years-old (most of their 8 daughters married rather late - well after 30). But it's possible that she still lived with her parents, and that Gaspar and Luisa returned to Lagos before 1664. Que vida mas loca!

- I've located 2 men named Bartolome de Avalos, one, who was Mestizo, living in Angamacutiro and married to Catalina Gutierrez Mulata Libre, and another, who was categorized as Morisco, and who married Melchora Juana India, 25 May 1659, in Indaparapeo. Since his daughter, Maria de Avalos, was said to have had her affair with Alonso Rodriguez in 1659, our Bartolome is likely the first. It's possible they're the same person, or perhaps father and son.

- Gaspar de Abalos signed his name, revealing that he had received an education, and that he had at least a middle-class upbringing.

I just noticed that I made an error: Luisa de Avalos y Quezada, daughter of Gaspar de Avalos cc Luisa de Quezada, was to marry Alonso HERNANDEZ de Montemayor, and not “RODRIGUEZ de Montemayor.” He was son of Diego Hernandez and Juana de Osorio. I was just excited about discovering a new branch, I suppose, and dear Alonso seemed incidental - which he wasn't!

It’s possible Gaspar de Avalos and Luisa de Quezada named 2 of their sons, “Nicolas.” And it’s just as possible that one of their other sons adopted the name, after the first was killed. The only son I haven’t accounted for is Diego, who was baptized 1 May 1642, San Matias, Pinos.

OMG AND THE RETURN TO LAGOS

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned some documents that I found indexed at the website for Biblioteca Publica del Estado de Jalisco Juan Jose Arreola:

Documentos referentes a las discrepancias entre los tribunales eclesiásticos y civiles, a causa de que el artículo de inmunidad de la iglesia no fuera respetado por el Teniente Provincial de la Hermandad de Lagos al sacar de la parroquia a Gaspar de Ávalos, Juan de Ávalos, García Nicolás y Juan Pérez, reos acusados de robo.

“Documents regarding the discrepancies between the ecclesiastical and the civil tribunals, because the article giving the Church immunity was not respected by the Teniente Provincial de la Hermandad of Lagos, when removing from the parish Gaspar de Avalos, Juan de Avalos, Nicolas Garcia and Juan Perez, inmates accused of robberies.”

When I first read that, I thought that the event spoken of happened decades before, since Nicolas Garcia was listed amongst those removed from the parish in 1665, and we know he died in 1657. But now, knowing that another son of Gaspar de Avalos used the same name, I think this happened in 1665. This makes sense, because Andrea de Avalos y Quezada married Roque Flores on 2 May 1664, and women usually lived with their parents, until they married.

So, some time between Feb 1660 and May 1664, the OMG returned to Lagos. And they apparently continued with their evil ways, even after what happened to their sons & cousins. Gaspar de Avalos was around 70, by this time, for crissake.

But more, as I reread the above description of the documents, I realize that I misread it, regarding the word "parroquia" which I misinterpreted as "parish," as in the "jurisdiction of a church." But in this case, it apparently means the "parish church," itself, where the Avalos had fled, seeking asylum. The Hermandad stormed the church, and arrested them, which is the violation spoken of.

You can't make this stuff up.

Congratulations on your findings. I am very appreciative of your work. The band of robbers ties in with the early history of the road being very dangerous between tepatitlan and San Juan de Los Lagos. Stories were made up that my ancestor was the head of the band because she became a bitter woman who always coverered her face after being attacked and her face scarred by a mountain lion. She had been described as a tall beauty, Güera, before the attack. After the attack she always wore a veil and avoided people. People later claimed that her son's inherited much because of what she robbed but she was rich from her parents leaving her a fortune. And she went from a young women who had everything, physical and facial beauty, intelligence, wit, and rich parents to boot, to a bitter woman who shied away from people and no longer the life of the party.

I don't descend from the D'Avalos family lines that we are talking about, though I do descend from the Padilla D'Avalos.

I descend from the Villasenor and Diaz de Leon families. I found Chris's post on how the Avalos and Diaz de Leon were related. I also descend from Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta de Sotomayor.

Joseph Diaz de Leon (m. Antonia Delgadillo) was the son of Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta Martinez de Sotomayor. Chris has Jose Diaz de Leon's brother Antonio Diaz de Leon as an ancestor.

Sobre la relación entre las líneas de los Ávalos entre sí, probablemente éstas ya existían desde España, pues el apellido Ávalos constiuye una de las ramas de la casa, solar y divisa Ramírez de la Piscina, desde 1537 hasta ahora la rama Ávalos ha participado en la custodia de la divisa. Actualmente la tiene el Marqués de Legarda como sucesor de la casa de Ábalos.

Existe una relación geográfica puesto que la Iglesia de Santa María de la Piscina se encuentra próxima " a media legua" del poblado de Ábalos.

En el libro La Divisa, solar y Casa Real de la Piscina, de Jaime Salazar y Acha et al,(cuya muestra está en GoogleBooks) se puede leer en la página 14 se dice que en 1534 el Doctor Diego Ramírez de la Piscina, historiador de Navarra conocido como Diego Ramírez de Ávalos ganó el pleito contra los usurpadores de la Divisa ante la Real Chancillería de Valladolid.

Mi abuelo materno me informó que nuestra rama (Ramírez de Coy) proviene del tronco Ramírez de la Piscina al igual que los Cos, los Ávalos, los Ponce. Ésta información la he ido corroborando poco a poco, puesto que de la descendencia de los Ramírez de la Piscina hay varias versiones.

Re: Ysabel Ruiz de Villasenor, I descend from her second marriage, to the mysterious Francisco Sanchez de la Mejorada. Ysabel and Francisco owned Guadalupe de Los Pozos, in Sierra de Pinos, which they came into possession of, around 1708. I don't know if her first husband, Mathias Gomez de Sotomayor, owned any property, he drops off the map around 1692.

Gabriel de Avalos and Maria Quesada did baptize Joseph de Avalos Quesada, 28 Dec 1625, San Matias, Pinos; his padrino was Gines Carrion, and he was confirmed on 24 Jan 1627, padrino Juan Gutierrez.

DIEGO DE AVALOS CC GERONIMA SALDANA

I found the 24 Mar 1666 IM for Nicolas Carrillo de Figueroa and Juana de Avalos; Juana de Avalos was said to be born in Sierra de Pinos, she was daughter of Diego de Avalos and Geronima Saldana. I was so caught up in helping research the Avalos that I did not pay close attention to what may be the big clue. You wrote " Ysabel Ruiz de Villaseñor, who married first to Matias Gomez de Sotomayor". Did you descend from Mathias or from the second husband. When researching the Avalos I came across some property that the Avalos ancestors used to used to own. The property is said to have passed down many generations to the de Sotomayor family. I think it said Garcia de Sotomayor family so it might not be the same family.

I just pulled out my copy of "retonos" by Marian Gonzalez Leal.

I did not read it first because I did not want it to influence my research. I'm glad that I didn't. My research corroborates his theories. There were two separate Avalos families yet both of them left descendants in los altos de Jalisco. Both of the Avalos(D'Avalos ) families intermarried with many of the same families. I have posted examples of the two Avalos families marrying into the Villasenor family.

Mariano does not give these lines that I have posted. these lines complement his work and validate his theories.

However, even if in Mexico they are two distinct lines, they are very interconnected so I believe that further research in Spain would show that these two Avalos lines come from the same family. It would be a big surprise if they weren't the same family because it would be to big a coincidence with all that they have in common such as who they marry and what social circles they ran in. They ran together. At least the first generations in Nuva Galicia.

this is pretty exciting. I think from the names these people use they have to come from either Gonzalo de Villasenor and Aldonza de Avalos Hijar or Diego de Villasenor and Geronima de Avalos. I just made a second connection to the Avalos Villasenor family the day before July 4th, so I'm really excited by this news. i already come from Ysabel de Avalos, daughter of Gabriel de Avalos and Maria de Quesada. and then the other day i connected throug the Diaz de Leons to Juana de Avalos/Villasenor. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/De_Villaseñor-17
i think it's the same person Cris was asking about earlier on the thread. i kinda thought the Gonsalo de Villasenor and Aldonza de Avalos hijar couple made sense cause a lot of them use Avalos and it seems that people use the most prestigious name and it doesnt seem like many families are more prestigious than the Villasenor family except maybe the Avalos de Hijar familiy. but, i'm really curious about any new information about these people.

I took a look at the posts and realized that I had left out a generation.

Gonzalo Villaseñor y Zuniga is the son Gonzalo Villaseñor Cervantes and Maria Zuñiga

So the line should read:

Gonzalo de Villasenor married to Aldonza Avalos e Hijar.

Gonzalo de Villasenor y Zuñiga and Aldonsa Avalos are this same couple.
