Grandchildren

I'm a proud grandmother, too. This is my clan (w/yr of birth; without surnames) -
The children of my daughter Elena:
Joseph Jesus, 1999
Emma Anabel, 2001
Carolina Ryann, 2005 (Carolina - with a Spanish pronounciation, NOT like in North Carolina)

The children of my daughter Laura:
Maria Liliana Evangeline (AKA Lily), 2003
Naomi Arlene, 2005

The child of my daughter Heather Maria:
Jacob Luis, 2004

All proudly carrying Zacatecan genes.

My two sons, Patrick Joaquin and Justin Miguel, are not married - yet.

Congratulations on Emily!!

Is it just me....??

...or is it harder to post a message? I don't mean to come to the site and actually post. But, when Ranchos was around, it was easy to see and respond to a message because it popped up in our email. Now we actually have to come to the site...and I'm finding that, now, I'm not doing it as often. I love the site, really, it just seems harder. I feel like I haven't really had any dialogue with anyone. :o(
On a brighter note, I went to a book signing/reading last weekend with Sandra Cisneros. For all the readers in the group, I recommend all her books - especially to the women. She writes with so much passion...she's so lyrical in her words. Her last book, Caramelo, I've read about 20 times. Ms. Cisneros signed my copy and a copy of poetry of hers that I bought at the signing called, "Loose Woman". I know this doesn't seem to have anything to do with genealogy, but her book, Caramelo, is the story of the main characters family, as her great-grandfather was from Spain, her grandparents from Mexico, and, finally, as her father made his way from Mexico to Chicago. It's a fun book with lots of historical references that you all may find entertaining.

Hello to all!

It looks like "Grandma" got caught napping and Mickey beat me to the
draw~!!! I had a great announcement planned to send my "Ranchos Compadres
and Comadres" but with all the activity going on here I just had not had a
chance to do so! Yesssss, my little Emily was born on Monday (Swiss time)
at 7:36 am and weighs about 7 lbs 2 oz. I say "about" because they figure
things in grams, kilos, etc. around here.....not like we do in TEXAS!
YEA!...TEXAS has another little beauty!!! A Texas Rose....since she looks
like a little rosebud! :-) Is Grandma proud or what???? :-) :-)
Actually, I am so happy that words cannot explain it all! My daughter and
son-in-law surprised me when they said it would be a "home birth"......and,
after my initial shock......I accepted it. I had these visions of crying,
pain, etc. but it turned out to be one of the most beautiful experiences of
my life! My daughter did extremely well! Of course, the midwife was
prepared to take my daughter to the hospital if things did not go well.
Little Emily has been a wonderful baby and my little Leon (her five year old
brother) is just so happy she is here! Emily has already grasped his little
finger and that made him beam even more!

Today is Wednesday and my little Emily has experienced her first snowfall!
We were greated with snow this morning and it has been snowing for about
five hours now! Yesterday we had a beautiful sunny day! This reminds me of
Texas weather.....you never know what the next day brings!

I know I am way off the subject now.....but Grandmas have a tendency to do
that when it comes to our grandchildren! I am soooooo happy~! I now have a
new little leaf to add to my growing family tree! She was indeed a "special
delivery" and I cannot wait to show her the wonderful stock she comes from!

Hugs to all,

Josie in Switzerland

Maybe we should have a special welcome committee for all the Ranchos babies.
Yes I know they weren't born in one of our Ranchos, but their genes came out
from one of our Ranchos and nothing will ever change that.

Well I know there have been other Ranchos babies born this year and last
year and I would be happy for those of you who know who I'm talking about to
make your announcements public, but I'll not out of respect for your
privacy. I would just like to say CONGRATULATIONS to all of you and
especially to this newest one, Emily in Swisa, Switzerland (can I come for a
visit?).

Does anyone on the list practice the silver dollar tradition?????

My mom (hey don't dad's have traditions?), well anyway my mom would say that
when the child gets just a little older than new born you are suppose to
take a silver dollar and touch its hand with it. If the baby takes the
dollar then it is a sign of a life of prosperity if the baby doesn't it
means otherwise. Hmmm, I can see how this one might not be popular to
practice because I'm sure some of the babies don't grasp the dollar.

Reply for Joseph

Joseph,

Got your request. Some of my fondest memories of my Mom are of the way she
would use hand gestures to emphasize a point. Such as touching the tip of her
index finger to the area below the outside corner of her eye, then pulling
corner down to slightly expose the area below the eyeball. She would do this and
say something like "Vease bien, mijo" when making a point that I should keep
an eye on something, or someone; or look into it more deeply.

My Mom's Father's family comes from La Noria de San Pantaleon, Zacatecas.
Has anyone crossed this area in their research? I believe it is near
Sombrerete, Zacatecas.

Please note the date and location for our next meeting: July 29th at 11:00 am, at the Raley's
Event Center in Brentwood. Thank you Kitty for the wonderful tip on the Event Center!

I will draft an agenda for the next meeting as we get closer to the date. One item is our
individual genealogy libraries. Please put that together and e-mail it to Kitty.

I am also attaching Kitty's handout from the meeting.

Joseph, I am cc'ing you so that you can post the minutes from our meeting and Kitty's handout
on nuestrosranchos, if you would like to do so.

In closing, I want to say that it will be nice to get out of the 100 degree weather in Sac
and escape to Brentwood for our meeting in July.

Bueno ???

is there anyone on the other end of this email?

Did we lose all of you?

I hate to stimulate conversation for the sake of conversation, but. . .

. . .I really would appreciate you emailing back to the list if you get
this message.

If you get this message just click "reply" change the Subject and send
me your favorite recipe for hand made Tortillas de Harina or tell me the
name of your latest great grandchild who just happens to be a direct
decendant of your GGGG grandfather from Los Altos de Jalisco or explain
to me some of the unusual things that your parents did that might have
been folklore and tradition coming from generations ago in Mexico. .
.for example. . .Every once in a while my Mom would be doing her thing
and suddenly she would in a hightened voice say, "Mijo vengase aqui." I
would come to her and she would put her hand in my pocket and have this
look of discomfort on her face. Well on the surface this would appear
strange until you heard the "rest of the story." Seems that at these
time of hurried action she would suddenly be struck with a big "itch" in
the palm of her hand. . .it didn't happen often but when it did this was
a "sign" to her that Money was near. So she would find her closest child
and transfer that money into one of their pockets while at the same time
suffering the discomfort of having the itch in her palm.

Sounds strange, but my Mom would do things like that and to us it was
normal.

So did any of your Mom's ever pass on their thoughts and traditions and
beliefs via their "old country" way of thinking?

Add Your Films on Nuestros Ranchos

As some of you have noticed, one of the new functionalities of the new Nuestros Ranchos site is the films database. The database allows you to search the IGI and VRI indices on familysearch.org simply by finding the name of the relevant municipality and the relavant dates. The database also has information on films that members have on permanent loan at their local Family History Centers.

Currently there are nearly 450 films in the database. Ideally, we would like to have all of the films from our region which are indexed on the database. For any of you who use familysearch.org often and have figured out what the batch numbers are for your relevant municipalities, please take the time to share the information for the group by putting the information into the database if it is not there yet.

The database can also now be edited, which means that if a film is already listed, but is listed with incorrect dates or batch numbers you can correct the errors. You can also add your name to the list of borrowers if you have a listed film on indefinite loan at your local FHC.

Please let me know if you have any questions or problems using the database.

Genealogia Section to Podcast

Seems that the word: Genealogy is a looked upon with distain from those
that study History. For that reason I left the word out of the
description of the Nuestra Familia Unida podcast project. Genealogy is a
subset of History and felt I was not slighting anyone in the genealogy
camp by doing this. Well with some files on genealogy scattered around
the website I thought I should at least create a section for the
genealogical materials, which I did.

Have a look at the new genealogy section of the Nuestra Familia Unida
podcast:

http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com/podcast/genealogy.html

There are a lot of talented and knowledgeable folks that are receiving
this notice that I could almost "beg" to step forward and produce
content for this section. If you have a genealogical message within your
understanding that could benefit the community I would ask, say, tell,
command (well that's going a little overboard), plead with you to bring
this light out from under your bushel basket and help those of us that
need this understanding.

Don't feel you have to have a Ph.D. or be some kind of authority to
contribute. A small contribution here and there will add up to a section
of this podcast project that will help many. Be part of it.

Latest grandchild

My wife Gloria and I are still here, Xossef. You can't lose us that easily. We're slow but steady...como las tortugas. We don't have any great grandchildren yet. Our latest grandchild is Elena Lin, 8 months old. Her father is our youngest son, Eduardo Mateo Cancio DELGADO Calvillo. Her mother is Janeen Louie Wong, fourth generation Chinese-American. Elena's GGGGGGGGGParents are: Pedro de Campos and Xacinntta de Espinossa from Pinos, Zacatecas. I estimate their birth at 1660/1665. That's on my father's side. Gloria would have to do her own calculation for her side.

We are in Albany, CA. How does Elena get to Pinos? Here goes: Oxnard, CA (me)>Tepatitlan, Jal(dad)>Aguas, Ags(GP)>el Mesquite, Encarnacion de Diaz, Jal(married Garcia Espitia)>el Capulin, Jal>la Sieneguita, Jal>Lagos de Moreno, Jal(Espitia married De Campos)>Pinos. Considering that I have ancestors who were Piro, Chiricahua, Tepecan or , Basque and Gloria is half Puerto Rican including African, Taino, Basque and yet-to-be determined others...poor Elena will need a pamphlet to figure out exactly what kind of a "salad" she is. Fascinating...huh?

David Delgado, retired and beginnin to enjoy it.

Poblacion Negra de Mexico

I have posted a couple of chapters of a book I just purchased in the Files section. For anyone interested in historical ethnography or the issue of castes and slavery in Mexico, it is the seminal work on Mexican black ethnohistory.

The book is a wealth of primary source materials on demographics and the ethnohistory of colonial Mexico.

I have included the two parts with the most numerical data but there are other chapters with excepts from archival documents on the daily life, social mobility, etc. of blacks and other "castas" in Nueva Espana.

From the jacket:

The first edition of this book, only six years after the expansion continent-wide of the indigenist movement born in Mexico, rediscovered our portion of America and that in her veins ran not ony indigenous blook, mixed with the white heritage that came with the European conquistadores, but also that which was imported from a part of Africa.

03/31/2006---Ranchos Yahoo Closing

On the 31 March 2006 the Ranchos Yahoo group will cease to function as a
group.

At this point we have roughly 40%-50% of the group members moved over
(this is not good news).

So after that date any messages you post to the email address
(ranchos@yahoogroups.com) will not work

After 31 March 2006 all messages to the Ranchos group need to go through
the Nuestros Ranchos website email distribution lists:

research@nuestrosranchos.org (for
messages strictly related to genealogical questions and inquiries)

general@nuestrosranchos.org (for
messages of a historical general nature or of the culture of the region)

announce@nuestrosranchos.org (for
announcements or messages related to events of interest to group members)

Here are some great instructions by Arturo that can be found at the website:

Ranchos Yahoo Closing: CountDown - 3 Days to Go

Don't worry. . .soon the group will be back to what most will consider
to be normal. As far as email delivery I don't think anyone will be
able to tell the difference between the Yahoo Ranchos and the Nuestros
Ranchos sites. (And yes those pesky double postings will stop, but
during this transition time they have been necessary). The main thing
is that you subscribe yourself to one, two or all three of the email
distribution lists and then "reply" to those confirmation emails.
Hijola, aren't you guys getting tired of hearing of those confirmation
emails? Once that is done you will never have to do anything again
unless you decide to change from individual emails to Digest or from
Digest to individual emails. In fact if you are ever going on vacation
or just don't want emails sent to you there is an option to set you
subscription to "no mail" and then you can just go to the
http://nuestrosranchos.org site and read the messages online.

Anyway like I said on 31 March 2006 the Yahoo Groups will in effect
stop functioning as a group. If you take a look at the Yahoo
Description page you can see that it has been savagely modified to
point people to the http://nuestrosranchos.org site. My hope is that as
the small percent of the 30-50% of those that have not retrieved their
passwords get the message that the Yahoo group has closed they might go
to the website and see a message with the "arrow" pointing them in the
right direction.

Good luck and we'll see you on the other side (oops, that should have
been said on the last day).

If you are totally lost, confused, intimidated, afraid, sad, mad, or
just plain fed up, but really want your subscription to stay intact and
don't know what to do NEVER FEAR! ! ! Joseph, Rosalinda, and Arturo are
HERE! Yes just email us at moderator@nuestrosranchos.org and one of us
will be glad to move you. Remember doing genealogy research never
requires you to be proficient in the latest internet and computer
technology. If you just want us to move you we will!
