Linda,

I think what happened is some time after certain longer films were indexed, familysearch reorganized and cut up some of the films into parts (check to see if those films have parte 1, parte 2, etc in their titles now).

What I had to do is some math: Parte 1 films should match Katy's numbers, but when you get to the end of parte 1, and go to the film with the parte 2 title, you have to subtract the image number that was indexed from the first number on the new film page.

See this index:
http://guadalajaradispensas.tumblr.com/post/80839559488/matrimonios-185…

Now, part 3 is is in reference to Katy's site, not familysearch, so disregard that for now.

We'll look for the first index, on image 904, Jesus Serrano. That obviously does not match the film linked here:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18429-39494-12?cc=1874591&wc…

The film is 628 images long, with the link taking you to image 2. Notice the first image indexed at Katy's site starts on 890. Subtract 889 (because the film link starts on image 2, not on image 1) from the original index image number, 904. That gives you 15. Type 15 into the image box. and now you are at the record that was formerly on image 904, Jesus Serrano.

I hope this is clear-- this isn't for all of the films, just the ones familysearch changed, but it is irritating. If you need help with a specific record, email me through Nuestros Ranchos and I'll help you.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are my suggestions to Linda unclear? It's a matter of subtraction, but I'll help anyone who is confused.

Are you referring to Katy's site? I am thankful that she has volunteered her efforts to help the rest of us in our quest for genealogy. I volunteered to index when Claudia's site was active; I hope to volunteer again once I have a bit more time to do so. As I said to Linda, it's a bump in the road that the numbering is off and I have to subtract, but that to me is better than having to search all of the dispensas films page by page.

The good part of this is now we know which film we can find a specific record for even if it means going through the film just like we would otherwise with the help this index gives us. I am grateful for the time and effort shared even when it's a " challenge"

I don't have an easy time with numbers but now that I know what film a record is in the order of the names it's very easy but takes a bit of time but not like not knowing where to look to begin with!
I am grateful for your work.

thank you Rosalinda.. I will try what you said.. it's harder than I thought it would be since many just show you the record and you don't have to go through all this..
again, thank you

Linda,

It's unfortunate that this happened, but I'll help you if you let me know which records you're looking for-- maybe when I have time, I'll try to help Katy fix the entries. While this makes our research a bit more challenging, I know that when I volunteered to help Claudia with the dispensas, I was trying to help people save time by not having to search page by page in all those films. I don't think anyone quite anticipated what happened when the films were reorganized. I for one view this as another bump on the road of genealogical research. That's also why I am happy to help you-- isn't that the purpose of Nuestros Ranchos? We should help each other. You have been so gracious in sharing your assistance and volunteering your time. I wish everyone was so generous. Just let me know how I can help you!

Has there been any research on Lope Ruiz de Esparza's ancestors?

I am beginning to dig into this family, and I found a book on google that mentions a Lope de Esparza from Navarra.

Comentarios

Comentario

For the progenitor of this family I have seen both Sancho Ruiz de Esparza, spouse Juana Zariquiegui, as well as Simon Ruiz de Esparza, and spouse Graciana de Vici.

From both of these are similar lines of descent to Lope Ruiz de Esparza of Aguascalientes. The posted genealogies have either secondary references (some links for which are broken), or no references at all.

Is there any available documentation for this family?

Apparently related to this family (Sancho Ruiz de Esparza) is the little booklet "La Familia de Atondo y la Genealogia de S. Francisco de Javier)" published in Pamplona in 1920. Do a google search for "La Familia de Atondo" and you can down load the pdf. Sancho Ruiz de Esparza, according to this booklet, is the great-great-grandfather of St. Francisco de Javier.

There is nothing on the male descendants of Sancho Ruiz de Esparza in this booklet.

I have seen some references in internet postings for the Ruiz de Esparza family that cite the Probanza de Hidalguea for (or by?) Dr. J. Leon Helguera.

Does anyone have a copy of this, or know where it exists?

Thanks for the info George. I'm sure one day, we'll be able to verify the ancestors of Lope. Also, one day, that missing document you refer to will be found.

Your 9th great-grandmother María Lorenza Tiscareño de Huerta was baptized 31 Aug 1683 at Parroquia de la Asunción in Aguascalientes. She was 15 days old when baptized, and thus born on 16 Aug 1683. Lorenza was the daughter of Francisco Tiscareño, mestizo, and María González de Huerta, also mestiza. Her father Francisco Tiscareño was the natural son of Capt. Juan Tiscareño with an unmarried woman (name unknown), probably a local indian because Francisco was said to be a mestizo. Francisco was born out of wedlock while Juan Tiscareño was still single, before he married Isabel Romo de Vivar. This is explained in the following excerpt from Juan Tiscareño's final will and testament:

"iten declaro para el descargo de mi conciencia que antes del Primero matrimonio tube un hijo natural llamado Francisco Tiscareño hijo de mujer soltera i libre para contraer matrimonio sin impedimentos declarolo asi para que conste i en esta conformidad mando se le de del remaniente del quinto de mis bienes por uso de alimento que assi le dejo i permite la lei Real de todo por averme servido mucho y aiudadome a ganar parte del caudal que assi he tenido de que he dado a mis hijos lo que llebo expressado..."

Nicolás Gómez was the son of Blas Gómez and María de Silva. No additional information about them. I have two daughters for Nicolás Gómez and Lorenza Tiscareño: 1) María de los Dolores, b. 1711 and 2) María Josepha b. 1714. What information do you have on Marina and Antonia?

Apparently this record was not indexed. You can see the actual record of Lorenza's baptism at

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12047-91323-38?cc=1502404&…

It reads as follows:

Al margen: "Lorenza espla."

Lorenza had two brothers, Joseph and Juan, and a sister, Juana Tiscareño de Huerta.

Thanks for your help!

Carolyn,

The record actually says "en caso de necesidad echo el Agua el P Guardian frai Christoval Romo" which means that the child was in danger of dying so the priest-on-watch Fray Cristobal Romo baptised him ("le echó el agua bendita"). What you thought read "AP Guardian" actually reads "el P. Guardian" meaning "el Padre Guardián" .

Hello Carolyn & Bill,

I also have Nicolas Gomez and Lorenza Tiscareno in my line. Thank you so much for clearing this up, I've been stuck on this couple for weeks, and with a case like Francisco's, I may never have figured it out. In the documents of her children & grandchildren, Lorenza is "espanola," as well as in her baptismal record; one would assume her parents were also "espanoles," but I guess it didn't always apply (in another of my lines, I discovered an ancestor was mulato libre, married to an india, which surprised me, since all of their grandchildren were "espanoles").

I have some additional notes regarding this couple. As mentioned:

Marina Gomez married Jose Francisco Sanchez in 1721; Jose Francisco was son of Francisco Sanchez de la Mejorada and Ysabel Ruiz de Villasenor; Francisco was hijo natural of Cristobal Sanchez and Francisca Narbais (his full brother, Jose Antonio, also hijo natural, married Gregoria Mendes de Sotomayor in 1720, Pinos). https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5FZ-6CY
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5F8-ZCZ

Antonia Gomez would marry Jose Francisco's half-uncle Luis Sanchez in 1722. Luis was also hijo natural of Francisca Narbais; on his marriage record, he is listed as "padre no conocido," yet he wears the same surname as his brothers/half-brothers (and he his children will use the compound name, Sanchez de la Mejorada). https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5F8-CR5

The Francisco Sanchez's and Nicolas Gomez's would be padrinos for each others' children, so these families were obviously close.

Maria de los Dolores Gomez would marry Felipe Munoz, son of Jose Munoz and Ysabel de Hungria Alvarez, and Maria Josefa, would marry his brother, Jose Bernardo, in what I assume was a double ceremony on 11 May, 1727, in Pinos.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5F8-C6Q
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5FZ-DTN

I descend from both Marina and Maria Dolores, the two lines meeting some 4 or 5 generations later.

I have 3 compound names associated with this group, and primarily in Pinos, 1670-1700s:

Gomez de Sotomayor
Sanchez de la Mejorada
Ruiz de Villasenor

On church documents for a couple of her grandchildren, Marina is listed as "Marina Gomez de Sotomayor." So, I assume there would be a Martin de Sotomayor connection in there, somewhere. Anyone?

The Sanchez, as Carolyn noted, I've seen listed as "Sanchez de la Mejorada." I've seen other "Sanchez de la Mejorada" in the archives (mostly in los Altos), but I've found no connection, and I'm still stalled at Cristobal Sanchez (I think the Sanchez Narvaez boys were born in SLP, but settled in Pinos).

Francisco Sanchez, widowed, would marry a second time in 1720 with Margarita de Cuevas Martin, so Ysabel Ruiz de Villasenor would pass away some time between 1703 (when Jose Franco is born) and 1720. I can find no info on her, other than there was an Ysabel Ruiz de Villasenor married to Mathias Gomez, also in Pinos. Mother & daughter, a la Lorenza Ruiz de Esparza et al? Or this could be the same woman, if Mathias died and Ysabel married Francisco - the timelines fit. Now, I've seen Mathias also listed as "Mathias Gomez de Zoto Mayor (sic)," so perhaps there is a connection between Blas/Nicolas/Marina Gomez and Mathias Gomez? Could Blas be Mathias' brother?

And, Bill, thank you for the Blas Gomez/Maria de Silva tip. Where can I find the record that would show this connection? I did some further research, tweaking her surname, and I found a Blas Gomez and a Maria de AVILA, as the groom's parents for the marriage of Juan Antonio Gomez and Nicolasa Mendes, Dec 1, 1723, in Pinos. "Avila" and "Silva" can look very similar, in some of these documents, so I'd like to see what you have.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5FZ-KRY

I'm topped-out in all of these lines, so if anybody has any further information, I would be very grateful!

Blas Gomez [de Sotomayor], Maria de Silva or Avila (Pinos, 1670-1680).

Cristobal Sanchez [de la Mejorada], Francisca Narbais/Narvaez (Pinos, 1650-1660, though I think these Sanchez Narvaez were born in SLP).

Jose Munos/Munoz, Ysabel de Hungria Alvarez (Pinos, 1670-1680).

Francisco Sanchez Y Ysabel Ruiz de Villasenor (Pinos, 1660-1670).

Gracias y saludos,

Manny Diez Hermosillo

Hello Carolyn,

I think I saw in another thread you're descended from Mariana de los Dolores Gaitan, daughter of Joaquin Gaitan and Maria Josefa Galvan? Joaquin Gaitan & Maria Josefa Galvan are my g4s (my g3 is Mariana's brother, Jose Thomas), and I recently located a dispensation for Mariana's marriage to her primo tercero Jose Manuel Gaitan: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18411-41159-67?cc=1874591&wc…

This is lovely, because it features family trees for both the Gaitan and Gomez lines, with Miguel Gaitan and Nicolas Gomez as the respective troncos. Unfortunately, it reveals nothing new regarding these lines for me, but it has some interesting details: Jose Manuel and Mariana ran off, Maria Josefa shows up at Jose German's house looking for her daughter, a chase ensues... good stuff! Some of the Gaitan's and Sanchez's were witnesses, and there are signatures (by those who could write). I found 3 more dispensations for descendants of these same couples (including another of Jose German Gaitan's children), showing the links between these families as well as the Sanchez's, They also have Gomez family trees, with Nicolas as the tronco. I'll upload them when I get a chance.

By the way, I descend from both Maria Dolores Gomez and Francisco Xavier Gaitan, following the same lines as Mariana in these trees; Mariana's brother Jose Thomas (my g3) would marry Maria Dolores Cortes, and their daughter was Cecilia Gaitan; Cecilia Gaitan would marry Pioquinto Sanchez, son of Jose Antonio Marcos Sanchez, son of Thomas Antonio Sanchez, son of Jose Francisco Sanchez and Marina Gomez Tiscareno, daughter of Nicolas Gomez & Lorenza Tiscareno and sister of Maria Dolores. We also descend from Miguel Gaitan through his daughter Juana Victoria, who was the mother of Apolonia de Jara, who was the mother of Jose Antonio Marcos Sanchez, father of Pioquinto Sanchez. My g2s Pioquinto Sanchez and Cecilia Gaitan were 4o & 5o grado in 2 lines (the skipped generation was probably due to their age difference: he was 29 and she 16 when they married), so I don't think they needed a dispensation (and no one in my family has a tail...).

Stay tuned!

I came upon this while searching for another ancestor's burial record: Lorenza Tiscareno was buried 28 Jul 1753 in Pinos. She died at age 69, cause doesn't seem to be given. She did leave a testamento. Nicolas appears to have survived her, it also appears that they were the owners of the Santa Rita:

Pat,

Why don't I just send you the same info I sent to Rosalva then if what you are looking for isn't included I'll do a single search. There are just some many pages listed in the index for Duran and for a even a single Duran. At a glance I see that some of your ancestors are included in the pages I sent to Rosalav. It seems you might be cousins :)

Hello Pat
I also descend from Juan Ximon Duran and Regina de Aguallo. It is thru their daughter Melchora de los Reyes Duran whom married Diego de Salazar and when he died she remarried. Her second marriage to Luis de Velasco is the connection to all my Velasco family lines in Nochistlan Zacatecas. If you would like to share info send me an email thru hartparkangler@yahoo.com. I tried contacting you thru the Nuestros Ranchos link but I guess it did not reach you or it went to spam.

Pat,

Hello. I just started researching my family history and was wondering if you have any of my relatives in your family tree. Most lived in several "municipios" of Nochistlan as well as Apozol and Jalpa. Recently I found out I may have had relatives in el Rancho de los Duranes. The following is all I have so far on the Duran side of my family.

1. Delfino Duran, born 1915 in Nochistlan, died 1960-62 in Las Taunas, Jalpa, ZA. He was the son of 2. Cruz Duran and 3. Juana Esquibel. He married Sebastiana Ruiz in Nochistlan, daughter of Martin Ruiz and Gregoria Valdez. Sebastiana, born 20 Jan 1914 in El Aguacate, Nochistlan, ZA, died 3 March 2007 in Agua Rica, Ixtlahuacan del Rio, Jalisco.

2. Cruz Duran was born in Tlachichila, Zacatecas.
3. Juana Esquibel was born in Zacatecas.

Children of Juana Esquibel and Cruz Duran are:
1. Ismael Duran, born 1912 in Zacatecas. He married Guadalupe Duran, daughter of Esmeregildo
Duran and Apolinaria. Esmeregildo Duran later married Angelita.
2. Delfino Duran (mentioned above).
3. M Soledad Duran (1930 Mexico Census lists 1915 as her estimated birth year.)
4. Maria Duran (1930 Mexico Census lists 1919 as her estimated birth year.)
5. Leandra Duran

Ismael, M Soledad and Maria Duran are listed in the 1930 Mexico Census at:

"Mexico Census, 1930," index and images, FamilySearch
(https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MPT9-X7T : accessed 18 Nov 2012), Ismael Duran in
household of Ismael Duran, El Aguacate, Nochistlán, Zacatecas, Mexico.

This is about all I have so far. I'm contacting a great aunt in Nochistlan, on Sebastiana's family line, to try to get more information. I don't know her, but recently acquired her last known phone number.

Juan Simon Duran and Regina de Aguayo are my 9th Great Grandparents. Do you have any information about their parents or European origins?

Jesus Gabino Duran posted on genealogy.com back in 2003 the following,

"The surname Duran mostly came from Nochistlan Mexico; Juan Duran came to Mexico in 1526, son of Garcia Duran and Catalina Sanchez. My father made a tree starting from Juan Duran Duque, I will like to share it , and have information on how to link Juan Duran Duque( +1673) with his ancestors. Maybe I will have to trace them to Spain.
Regarding Juan Duran, I have two informations , one that he was from Badajoz (Zafra) and the other that he was from Madrid ( from the recent book from Sir Hugh Thomas
We have got together in Nochistlan were a lot of people have the surname Duran"

I have not been able to contact this person to see where exactly he sourced this information.

Do you know if there is any connection between Juan Simon Duran and Juan Duran Duque?

Thank You

Gracias y suerte!

Was there another Mexticacan near Aguascalientes?

I'm looking at the baptism record of my ancestor Juana Sanchez from Aguascalientes, back in 1619.

Hello Steve,

I believe that you were initially right in assuming Mexticacan, Jalisco. I had ancestors from a few families that traveled or left relations in the
Mexticacan/Nochistlan area that were originally from Aguascalientes. These families kept in touch and some moved back while some moved on to Tepatitlan/Jalostotitlan Jalisco.

Thanks for your reply R.A. Ricci. While having a closer look at how all these villages developed, it does make sense that it referred to Mexticacan. I read somewhere that at the beginning it was difficult to establish a settlement in Aguascalientes with newcomers, and for that reason, the Spanish crown started giving land grants to individuals already settled in other towns in the area.

yes i'm pretty sure teresa is a daughter of catalina cid caldera(unless it turns out he married twice)

i don't know if the teresa who married pedro jose contreras is the same one who married alejandro fernandez since i can't find a marriage record for either couple.

i do know that teresa and alejandro had at least three kids together: celedonio, gertrudis, and juan. alejandro has a brother named gregorio and a sister named matiana.

thank you for responding. Alejandro and Teresa are my 7th gr-grandparents. My problem with this being the same Teresa is the approximate date of her child with Pedro Joseph Contreras but I sure would love to solve this mystery for me! I have 5 children for Alejandro and Teresa. Felipa married to Cosme Barrios and Pedro married to Cecilia Pinedo. I have my files on Rootsweb.com.
thank you again.

I also descend from Celedonio Fernandez through his son Agustin Fernandez and his first wife Maria Dolores Sanchez.. looks like we are family. I've also been working with Micaela Gonzales on mutual family lines.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

HI,

I have the same information. Theresa Carlos de Godoy (dau of Antonio Carlos and Catalina Cid Caldera de Godoy and granddaugther of Juan Carlos de godoy and Maria Rosales) was married to Pedro Joseph Contreras (I don't have the date). But what I know is that they had at least one dau Rosalia Contreras Carlos de Godoy who married Joseph de Olague. Rosalia Contreras and her husband (Joseph de Olague) had at least one dau Salvadora de Olague born in 1731 in Puesto de MOntesillos, Jerez, Zacatecas.

I hope this helps

Hi again,

I think I found her. Theresa Carlos de Godoy married Alejandro Fernandez and they had at least one child. Gertrudis Fernandez Carlos de Godoy born in 1704 in Jerez, Zacatecas. This Theresa is the dau of Antonio Carlos de Godoy and Maria Carrillo. Her grandfather was Joseph Carlos de Godoy Rosales (I don't have the name of Joseph's wife). Great grandfather was Juan Carlos de Godoy and Maria Rosales.

I hope this helps

Artists/Painters that traveled in Mexico and drew what they saw

Back in the Colonial era of Mexico there were a number of artists/painters that traveled through Mexico and drew paintings. Here is a link:

...according to the pop-up window I got when I tried to access the site you provided. I copied and pasted the site and my Chrome browser blocked it due to malware identified on the site.

The topic of your post, traveling artists of Mexico, sounds very interesting and I'll have to look into it. You may want to edit your original post, though, to prevent others from possible malware damage and problems with their computers and files due to malware on that site.

For example, I took one of the names of the artists "Eugenio Landesio" and look in images "Eugenio Landesio Mexico" and a number of colonial paintings came up. Even old paintings of Haciendas! I am hoping to find old paintings of Haciendas of Zacatecas.

Here is a painting of one of the popular painters of Mexico "Jose Maria Velasco Gomez (1840 - 1912). What catches me on this one is that he is about the same generation as my great grandfather and I also wonder if he looks like my great grandfather as how my great grandfather was described to me by one of the elders of Huejuquilla.
