Retonos de Espana En Nueva Galicia

Hola Ranchos-

Feliz navidad a todos and  prospero ano nuevo. My name is Ms. Clinton Nash and I live in Davis, California and I am grateful to be on this list.  I am begining research on my children's father's side,  Jose Luis GARNICA de Ajijic. His father, Jose Luis GARNICA was born in Arandas and had green eyes.  I will be posting the little I have soon.

Celebration of La Navidad:

I once lived in Ajijic, a small puebla on the shores of Lago Chapala.  In the days before Christmas, panoramas appeared in doorways. I was overawed at the complexity and beauty of the elaborately constructed panoramas of miniature people, animalitos, trees, houses la gente walking toward the Baby Jesus in the manger. These displays, often as large as a sheet of plywood, 4' x 8' , were such an exquisite reflection of true faith and belief. The effort and devotion was immense. I will never forget them.

The fireworks during those twelve days before Christmas were wonderful. Attached to poles in the plaza

Yes this is great you have your own copy of a hard to find book
[WorldCat showed it is available at only 6 libraries] available to you
close by. But for other books that you might want to consider doing an
ILL for I would look at WorldCat. Check with your local library and see
if they subscribe to WorldCat and if you can access it at home or maybe
you can access it only at the branch or a University library. . .in
fact maybe taking Adult continuing education or being a friend of the
library will allow you to access WorldCat from home. Your local large
University library might surprise you as to how much information they
have on Jalisco. I live close to Duke and they have soooo much that it
will take me many years to be comfortable that I've accessed all the
info that might be valuable to my research.

WorldCat is a Library Catalog of Libraries all over the world. When you
access it and plug in keywords like "Los Altos de Jalisco" you get
results like this:

Retonos de Espana En Nueva Galicia

Deborah,
I did not know you joined the Ranchos Group.
Yes, we did not get a chance to talk and I will definately give you any
information that I come across.  It will have to be after the
holidays.  I have just started entering it into a genealogy program but can
give you copies of what Steven and I have uncovered.

I will also try to get over to see your
dad.   How is he doing?

Have a Merry Christmas!  Have to go to sleep
because my daughters will wake me up very early.

Genealogy is very addicting.

Tu Prima,
Nena

New File downloaded on 11-30-03

Please see the new file Steven has sent me dated 11-30-03.

Working together is definately the key to unlocking more knowledge.
As, some of us have more years of knowledge regarding "Genealogy
Research" it is great to share our resources.

Steven, has been very helpful with his knowledge and connections. I
hope to someday become very knowledgeable in this field. I am a
novice but learning more every day.

I also want to thank Irma Gomez-Lucero for her wealth of knowledge on
genealogy in Jalisco.

After Christmas and New Years pass I will try to work more on my
genealogy. I will also refer family members to this website. So
some day we can complete most of this very interesting puzzle of our
ancestors.

Gracias and Adios,
Nena

Tayagua, Zacatecas/How do you Celebrate?

From what I know is that most every home built their own manger some which were very elaborate.

Posadas were and are still a major part of the Christimas celebration. The children and their families travel with Jose and Maria seeking lodging during Advent. At the last home of the evening they serve beverages made from sugar cane and fresh fruits steeped in sweetened water. Each family makes their beverage slightly different. They then have a Pinata for the children and they are filled with candies called colaciones and other assorted candies.

Gifts were not a part of Christmas in the early days. Children would set their shoes out on Christmas Eve and wait for El Nino Dios to fill their shoes with hard candies. And of course being mostly Catholic there was midnight mass with a procession and mass again on Christmas Day.

I'll talk to my mom to get more facts.

Feliz Navidad a todos,

Alicia Carrillo

for those of you looking in the Villanueva area. I was looking at film:
1158678 the
other day and found about 8 years worth of death records [1767-1775
about] for the hacienda de Tayagua on this mostly bautismos film. I've
seen that some are looking in Tayahua but am unsure if this is the same
place. Just FYI.

ps: Someone asked me how "we" celebrate christmas. And for the life of
me all I could think about was Tamales and later on New Years Menudo. A
meal and exchange of presents.

Does anyone know of how the people of Jalisco, Zacatecas and
Aguascalientes celebrated Christmas in earlier years?
