I'm working on records from Zapotlan el Grande/Ciudad Gusman Jalisco
and am finding many people from Samora/Zamora and can't find it on the
map of Jalisco. Does anyone know if this town is in Jalisco or a
neighboring state? The time period is around 1750.
thanks for any help, Linda from Wa.

New Mexico State U. has filmed 3 archives from Mexico: three
collections in Durango--"the archives from the Durango Cathedral,
the state's notary records and a portion of the colonial materials
from the state historical archives." The Sombrerete will be the 4th
one.

NMSU worked with the town council to gain permission to film those
documents from Sombrerete. The person in charge at NMSU is
Dennis Daily. Perhaps you can contact him and inquire about future
projects.

I hoping and dreaming.....
I'm hoping they do the cities of Zacatecas, Jerez,
Vetagrande, and Panuca, in the future.

In my latest alumni issue from New Mexico State University in Las
Cruces, I found the following article:

NMSU is filming the archives of Sombrerete, Zacatecas.  It will
take 2 years and produce about 200 reels of film. "The archive
houses little used, but incredibly rich documentation for the period
of the late 17th century through the end of the 18th century."

Among the materials are the church sacramental records such as
the marriage records from 1738-1764.

I am looking forward to the completion of the filming.  Many of my
ancestors came from Sombrerete.  Don Diego de Vargas recruited
many of his NM colonizers from this area.  Many of us from NM
trace our roots to this region.

I have enjoyed reading the various contributions of the ranchos members
regarding immigration stories. Struggles, sacrifices, and successes.
Someone asked if I was the immigrant - I am not; my father came to this
country in 1916 when he was 4 years old. His genealogy and a brief
story (one paragraph) regarding an episode in that journey is in the
files (JJ Castro). That brief paragraph explains with whom he traveled.
Thanks again - are there any other immigration stories? I will have to
compose the rest of my family's story, and hope to post in a few days.
(I'm afraid I don't have as many details as some of you.)

I thought I would share this with the group.  Thanks to Angies
meticulous analysis of my family tree data, we have discovered that I
am decendant of Joseph Cayetano Grano (Rita and Eucevia and
Josepha's) father in a total of six different ways...  I guess we are
cousins in more ways than we thought.

For those that don't know John Schmal, he is probably
the leading historian on Zacatecas that I know, which
includes both Zacatecas and the United States. You
can also write to him and he will reply.

Does anybody have any information on the forced immigration of
Tlaxcaltec Indios to the Chichimeca regions of Colotlan, San Luis
Potosi and Chalchichuites in 1591? The involuntary migration was
organized by a certain Rodrigo del Rio in order to bring pacified
settlers to promising mining areas where the Spanish were to that date
unable to pacify the local Indios.

These were appartently a large percentage of the original settlers in
both Colotlan and Totatiche, Jalisco.

A sad story but a happy ending.
Our story is almost the same. After my grandfather
Alberto Duarte Vasquez died in 1923, in Mapimi, my
grandmother Maria Luz Cuevas Luera gathered all of her
5 kids and headed for El Paso, Texas, where she lived
and eventually died after some 40 years. The Mexican
civil war of 1915 and the flu epidemic devastated most
of the population of central Mexican states. Over
half of my dad's family died because of the flu
epidemic, which led of my grandfather's heavy drinking
and eventual death.

The good part of this story is that my grandmother saw
that there was no future for her kids in Mexico and
did something about it.

But can you imagine, my ancestors to come to the new
world about 1550 and prospered in Zacatecas and
Chihuahua, become ranchers, farmers, generals,
lawyers, governors, teachers, musicians, after a short
time in new Spain and Mexico, but eventually all this
was lost for most of them, and they came to this
country penniless but with hope

I took a trip to look for my grandfather's birthplace and I found it!
The house where he was born is nothing but adobe ruins, but I expected
that, since he was born in 1875 and the family left it in 1917 to come
to California...The ranch, "Los Portales" is located about three miles
south of Jalostotitlan, Jalisco. That town is full of beautiful
girls...The whole town is in a festive mood already. Decorating for
the August 15 Fiesta.
I also found a living cousin in one family line and three others that
I am pretty sure are related. I need to look at

City Hall......
My 3 uncles went to Mapimi, Durango, to get copies of
their birth certificates in and about 1952, also. The
Mapimi city recording clerk charged them $5.00 for
their certificates; he offer to put any date they
wanted on the births certificates!

analyze and find the connection to them. I visited Santo Toribio's
Church in Santa Ana. It is a beautiful and well kept place of worship.
I was told by one of the workers there, that since he became a saint,
everybody named ROMO or GONZALEZ is trying to establish a relationship
to the saint. "Where were all these relatives when he needed help?" He
asked...

I have some specific

How fascinating. I went to Mountain View High
1960-1961... new school Chester F. Awalt last 3
{1961-1964} years. I recall Stevens Creek Dam quite
well. My older brother and I loved the recreational
facilities {fishing},and Barbque pit area.
Permanente Creek...well it was my turf. Poison oak and
all... I would venture that Creek from one sector ro
another...on to Layola Corner and Mc Kelvey Park.

I've enjoyed the stories immensely(sp). Real people,
time, suffering, sacrifice, and family.

Thanks for sharing.

My Castanon ancestors left El Durazno, District of Jerez Zacatecas
in March 1916. The revolution hit El Durazno when the Federales and
and Revolutionaries fought each other in the fields around El
Durazno. The followers of Madera arrived first, looting the
village, stealing food, blankets and anything they could carry,
they then fled into the countryside. Later the same day the
Federales were seen coming from Jerez, the families would hide their
young women to protect them after a girl was stolen from Los
Rodartes across the road. The Federales took gr-grandpa Vicente
Castanon (1866) and trussed him to an ox-yolk, his daughter said it
looked like they crucified him, they stood him against a wall and
prepared to shoot him because he couldn't give them the information
about the Revolutionaries they wanted. For some reason they let him
go but destroyed everything that the Revolutionaries had missed.
They even burned the beans and the corn they feed the animals.
