Yes thanks so much for this. I've wondered about that word "Limosna" |
Cruz Alta y Cruz Baja

As far as I have always known, a burial with "Cruz Alta" meant that you were rich and could afford a sumptuous vigil, mass, procession, and burial. These cost more and were taken care of in a person's last will and testament.

The letter B used in that context "yo el B D Fulano de Tal" means Bachiller. A Bachiller was someone who had received their Bachelor of Arts degree (Baccalaureate), thus a Bachelor (compare: Bachiller/Bachelor). This title of Bachiller, as well as that of Doctor (roughly corresponding to a Ph.D.) could be obtained by anyone, lay and clergy, as long as they attended a Seminary University, and had the money to do so. It certified them as being highly knowledgeable about canon law and Catholic religious procedure. Regards, Steven H.

It was Zacatecas, Zacatecas records that were missing. Here is John I would, also, be interested in the missing Sombrerete records. My great grandmother was born there and I believe her parents were, also, born there. Her name was Ynes Salas [b: about 1845]. Her parents were Jose Maria Salas and Urbana Ruelas. I can't go any further back at this point. |

I'm in search of a map that would have the different colonial areas of
Mexico listed. I've know of Nueva Galicia, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Espana,
Filipinas or Nueva Filipinas, and I think there were others. Does anyone
know of a map that has these areas geographically plotted?
thanks,
joseph
