Cervantes DNA Surname Project

Hello Angel, I apologize
for not answering your emails right away. I
have been really busy now that
I came back from Mexico. Hey, this DNA
Cervantes project sounds
interesting. Tell me more about it. How much
does it cost to be part of
the project? I believe the expenses are
probably worth it if we are going
to know more about our ancestors.

That's right. During my research of documents of the beginning of the
19th century I have seen individuals catalogued as "Indios" with no
last names. Also, it is true what you say about taking the surname of
a patron, but I have also seen individuals with surnames taken from
towns in Jalisco, as well as occupations: San Juan, Sayula, Cocula,
Albanil, etc.

Mezquital del Oro in the southern section of Zacatecas but not very

Dear Dora,

Thank you for sharing your family history. My grandmother was Felipa
Gonzalez, and her parents names were Antonia Friere and Isidro Pedro
Gonzalez. Antonia and Isidro were from Zacatecas but I don't know which
town. Felipa was born there in 1888, and had several brothers and sisters.
They all moved to Durango because there were terrible threats and fights
over land rights in the 1880's-1890's. My grandfather Luis had to leave
when he was a young boy with his family due to the threats since my great
grandfather was labelled a revolutionary. Both Luis and his brother Gen.
Juan Pablo Gonzalez were in the Mexican Revolution and knew Pancho Villa.
My dad tells me that his uncle Juan Pablo was ambushed in the early 1900s
with the governor of Chihuahua, a second cousin named Abraham Gonzalez. I
am trying to verify all of this as it is oral history in my family, given to
me by my dad who recently passed away at age 90. He loved history and knew
of many people

Dear Marge,

The only person I could check with is my mother and uncle. My
great-grandfather was Leon Gonsalez, who married Julia Hernandez at around
that time, but I don't have an archive on this yet. I plan to see my uncle
who lives in Phoenix next month, he's 87 years old and he may know the name
of his great, great grandfather who would have been born sometime around
1835-1850 in or near Jerez. I will get back to you as I get further into
the research. Josie S.

My great-grandfather was a Zenobio/Cenobio Gonzalez born c. 1844 in Jerez
to Prudencio Gonzalez and Severiana Salcedo. His first wife, whom he
married in 1862, was Eleuteria Tovar, d/o Mauricio Tobar and Petra
Escobedo-Sandobal. His second wife, whom I descend from, was Ma. Francisca
Saldivar. Severiana

Dear Ranchos members,

I am a new, recently added member and if I have taken undue time to
introduce myself, please accept my apologies. My family surnames are in
this order, Gonsalez, Garcia and great-grandmother's name Hernandez. We
were from Zacatecas, near Jerez, and from long-standing oral history in my
family, my grandfather lived at La Hacienda de Trancoso, near Fresnillo. I
have requested the baptismal certificate of my grandfather, Luis Gonsalez,
born in 1868, with record submitted to the catholic parish of La
Purificacion in Fresnillo. My father told me that his grandmother, Julia
Hernandez was 6 years old and came with her father from Spain to be one of
the hacienda administrators---it looks like they had several administrators
as the hacienda was large and prosperous. Two of her sisters were born in
Jerez, and they married wealthy men. The story goes that because she
married a ranchero, she was looked down on by her sisters. My dad told me
his sister went

Hi all,

I recently learned that Jalisco has a website from which you can
order certified copies of civil records (birth, marriage and death)
via the Internet. The website can be found at:

http://registrocivil.jalisco.gob.mx

You can pay with a credit card and they use a messenger service to
mail your records.

The Cervantes surname in Mexico has its roots as far
back as the early 16th Century. You have two
important individuals with this surname.

The first one is Leonel de Cervantes, he came with
Hernan Cortes in the conquest of Mexico in 1521.
Leonel de Cervantes was born in Burguillos del Cerro,
Spain and was a member of a noble family. He was also
a Commander of the Santiago Order of Knights. Leonel
de Cervantes escorted Moctezuma out to address his
people who were in revolt against the Conquistadors.
Moctezuma was then stoned by his subjects. He died
later of these wounds. Just after the conquest Cortes
allowed Leonel to return home to Spain upon which
Cervantes promised he would return to Mexico with his
five daughters and marry them to Conquistadors. He
kept his promise. He

When the Spaniards made converts of the Indios of
Mexico they gave them
Spanish names. So am I correct that there are peoples
of every Spanish
surname out there that can eventually trace their
genealogy back to
where that name was "assigned" and then the trail
would end because it
would be extremely difficult or impossible to find a
written record of
the Indio names before conversion. . .OR. . .or do I
have this all
wrong? Was it only first names that were assigned to
them and then as
the Spaniards crossbred with the Indios those
bi-racial children then
had a ligitimate [traceable] name that could be traced
back to Spain?

How exactly did the names for the indios come about?

Hola Carrillo researchers:

My great-grandmother was Francisca Carrillo who was
born in Hujecar in 1843.  She married Casmiro Muro in
1863 (Santa Maria).  Francisca had 15 children that we
know of and we know that 4 came to the US.  I know
very little about the Carrillo's going forward,
however I have traced 3 generations back;  Francisca's
father was Pedro Nolasco Carrillo born 1812 in
Colotlan; m. to Tranquilana Sanchez; Pedro's father
was Felipe Carrillo m. to Mariana de Casas; Felipe
Carrillo's father was Andres Carrillo m. to Maria
Estefana Martinez.  So this puts me in the late 1770's
with the Carrillo's.

My Francisca did make it to the states, my grandfather
Casmiro died in 1911; I find Francisca in the 1930
census in CA living in LA county with her son Juan.
