Hispanic Origin?

When I'm filling out forms that ask for ethnicity I always feel a bit conflicted when I check "White" and leave the "Hispanic Origin" blank.

What you mark would be based on what group you relate to the most. I'm white on my father's side, Mexican on my mother's. Since my parents divorced when I was very young, and I never had contact with him or his family, I identify as Mexican, Chicana to be be exact. I do not feel white, tho physically I don't really look Mexican, and I could pass for ethnic white (Italian, etc.).

OTOH, I have, until recently, marked white for race, when ethnicity is a separate question. Some of my more radical friends mark Native American for race, and I've started doing that too. I figured that since I'm haplogroup B2 and Mexican culture is mainly Indian, that I'd start marking that for race.

Laura,
I too have resorted to marking documents that ask for my race as Native
American. My Autosomal DNA says I'm 23% Native American or New World,
therefore my statement is truthful. It also says I'm 59% European, 7% East
Asian, 3% Middle Eastern and 3% African.

Your 7% East Asian actually comes from your Native American ancestry and if
you have any Northern Siberian in your European it is most likely from your
Native American ancestry also. So your Native American is actually at least
30% which is close to the average for the Jalisco, Aguas, Zacatecas region.

23andme, AncestryDNA, and Gedmatch do a better job of calculating the
Native American because they included Native American populations that
FamilyTreeDNA did not include such as Pima, Mayan, and Colombian. You'll
notice that they are missing in the report at
https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/family-finder-pages/myorigins-metho…

Armando, the 7% North East Asia is actually focused on Korea and Japan, the
5% Central South Asian is focused in India. The 2% West Africa is over
Cameroon/Nigeria and the 1% East Central Africa's focus is Kenya/Tanzania
and the 3% Middle Eastern is Morocco/Tunisia. The 59% European is Southern
Europe, primarily Italy and Sicily, followed by Albania, Greece Portugal
and Spain.

Alicia, I was well aware of where the Northeast Asia and others are
focused. The problem is the methodology that FTDNA didn't use and the
methodology that 23andme, Ancestry, Gedmatch, Geno 2.0, Dodecad, Eurogenes,
MDLP, and Harrapaworld did use. Since FTDNA didn't use enough Native
American populations they didn't have enough Native American autosomal SNPs
to compare your DNA with and therefore they split your Native American DNA
into 2 or more regions where the DNA match due to the lack of a closer
match.

Anyone that has at least one Mexican parent and has tested with another
company other than FTDNA will have more Native American in their results.
Are we to believe that those other companies and Gedmatch calculators have
incorrect results and only FTDNA has the correct results? That's very
doubtful especially when they used fewer populations and the other
companies also consist of leading scientists such as Spencer Wells. FTDNA
didn't even include the Maya or Pima of which both have Native American
autosomal DNA yet the other companies and calculators did include those
populations.

You can see a spreadsheet of several people (names removed) that have
tested with several companies and you can see their results in it. To get a
good result for the FTDNA myOrigins results the Northeast Asia had to be
added to the total.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f4wiwm6rhswhr7d/Amerindian%20Comparison.xlsx?…

Those are just a few of the results I have seen from people that have
tested with multiple companies. I have seen results from many others.

You should upload your results to Gedmatch and use the Admixture
calculators so you can see the difference with the exact same FTDNA files.
AncestryDNA http://dna.ancestry.com/ has a sale right now for $79 and if
you get the test you will also see more Native American with the results
from that test.

The best way to learn about these results is to compare with others and
with different companies.

To the readers of the blog -

Is there anyone else willing to share their Native American and East Asian
results from FTDNA and another company?

Thanks Armando for this very detailed explanation, meaning that we can't
take all of this as 100% factual. Maybe one day they will get it right, or
if not right, get it a bit closer.

Armando thank you for your explanation on this topic, it was so obvious once I read it but I couldn't see the forest because of the trees.

Ancestry has my Native American at 8% and Finland and Northwest Russia at 1% and FTDNA has Native American at 5% with East Asian at 2% and Finland and Northern Siberia at 4%.

Armando,

I am confused: You said in the e-mail below that Spencer Wells, Phd, (whose name is familiar to me) is not at FamilyTreeDNA? I believe the lab at FamilyTreeDNA handles the tests for Genographic.

Dr. Spencer actually works with Mr. Greenspan, CEO of FamilyTreeDNA, as part of his team, and he sits on the advisory board. Mr. Greenspan said he would ask someone on his team to look into getting more Native American samples, but he mentioned someone else, whose name I can't recall now. I know how hard it is to get Natives to test, even those in the US, because of their beliefs and internal politics.

See link below about "Who is Who at FamilyTreeDNA:

Emilie, Spencer Wells didn't create myOrigins. Razib Khan and Rui Hu did.
Their names are at the top of the myOrigins White Paper.
https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/family-finder-pages/myorigins-metho…
Spencer Wells is the head scientist over the National Geographic
Genographic project.

When they say it is hard to get Natives to test they are talking about
Natives without even 1% Native American ancestry. The Maya and Pima
populations show a tiny bit of European ancestry and that is why Razib Khan
didn't use that population and it is why myOrigins is under reporting the
Native American ancestry. When they it is hard to get Natives to test the
talk more about Natives from what is now the U.S. and they are the ones
that don't want to test. The Native Americans of Mexico aren't against
being tested.

You can see the National Geographic Genographic results of Amerindian
(Mexico) at
https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/reference-populations/

Then compare it to the Mexican-American population in that same page.

You can also see a tiny bit of European ancestry in the Moreno et al study
that has been talked about here before. Go to the following page and create
free account then download the PDF then go to page 31 to see the results of
Native populations using a program called ADMIXTURE.
http://www.sciencemag.org/content/344/6189/1280/suppl/DC1

You'll see that at K=2 Native Mexicans have small amounts of green which is
the European ancestry.

Also notice that Carlos Bustamante's name is in the list of authors. The
populations in that study are the ones that were used in the Jessica Alba
episode of Finding Your Roots and Carlos Bustamante was interviewed in that
episode.

I thought I read somewhere that central Asia might be Roma people, probably via Spain.

I live in Mexico and I speak Spanish, that's the name of the main language spoken here (español). The RAE dictionary defines Spanish (español) as the common language in Spain and many American countries. In the USA foreigners prove their English proficiency with the TOEFL test, in France they use the DELF and DALF for French, and in Spain they use the DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera). It seems to me like in most countries where the language is spoken it is called español, except in Spain where for political correctness towards Spaniards who speak regional languages like gallego, vasco or catalán, they have to call it castellano (Castillian) rather than Spanish. But me and pretty much everybody I know in México, we speak Spanish (español).

Spain actually has several official co-languages in use in the various autonomous regions, i.e., Castellano (Castile and all Spain), Catalan (Valencia), Euskera (Basque region), Gallego (Galicia), etc.

At the time of the Conquest, Queen Isabella was Castilian and both the King and Queen spoke Castilian; in order to unite the several minor kingdoms of the Iberian peninsula with their growing empire, it was adopted as the official language of not only Spain and the Spanish court but also its territories worldwide. The Castilian dialect is what ultimately we know on this side of the pond as "español." Now, typically the terms 'español' and 'castellano' are used interchangeably.

In Spain, if you were to ask what was the name of the official language, they'd probably say it depends on where you are located.

My Mexican-born parents always referred to 'castellano' as being the proper form of the Spanish language, i.e., no slang.

Have you been able to locate any of your Reynoso's in this Census? If so, under which municipality - Juchipila or Moyahua?

I looked into La Cantera, but did not see any of the individuals I was looking for. I also looked at La Cantera Sur (just in case).

Esther,

I've found the right link and have found many of my relatives in San Jose de la Boquilla. The census was taken in May 1930, prior to the rainy season. That's when the crops were being planted just waiting for the rains to come. I know my grandfather Melesio Reynoso lived in Guadalajarita most of the year, but owned and worked the land in San Jose de la Boquilla. Thus, I found him and his whole family in San Jose de la Boquilla. By the way, that is where I was born (June), my father was working some of the land my grandfather owned in San Jose de la Boquilla.

Thanks,

Yes, that would make sense.......Do you know the region fairly well? Do any other names come to mind?

I did find Secundino Reynoso married to Aniceta Mejia. Secundino was my grandfather's 1/2 brother. That would explain why he is here, but my grandfather and the other siblings are not.

Thank you!

Jose,

Thank you for taking the initiative to go through each of the records. I was going to look into Pena Blanca, El Pitayo, and La Lobera. These all sounded familiar to me. If that didn't work, I was going to start going through each one (I will probably still do this once I get my computer fixed - it's running very slow).

When I shared with my father where I had found him and his family, he stated that he had never even heard of this rancho! He thought for sure that they would show up in La Boquilla since he remembers that his father and grandfather always mentioned the "sembradillos" in conversations that included your grandfather Melecio and grandmother Lucia.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me!

Hi Emile. The two "round things" under the crown are the world hemispheres, East and West. The one on the right represents Europe and the one on the left the Americas. That's the reason for the handshake between the two worlds. The Lion is the symbol of Spain, and the alligator represents the Americas, all under the watchful eye of God and the Holy Trinity (the triangle with the eye in the middle). Rgds, Bill Figueroa.

Such wonderful and beautiful maps! October 30, 1770 was scarcely one year after the First Expedition (Portola) arrived on the San Francisco peninsula and "discovered" the bay. All those landmarks they named along the route from San Diego and recorded in Crespi's diary.

The undated colored map is so interesting. I wonder why San Mateo is the only land area designated after the mission, presidio an almejas. There were three major villages of the Ssalson tribe that occupied San Mateo Creek, but the Bay Area was densely populated all along the shore so that shouldn't be the reason. I think the map must be before 1786, the year a mission assistencia was set up at "almejas". It was named San Pedro y San Pablo then and should probably appear as such on maps after that year. The geography looks really accurate compared with the other maps.

These are great treasures, thank you Madera!

Now! Regarding the San Mateo on that map of San Francisco Bay area? I showed it to a friend who has a Doctorate in History of Zacatecas, Mexico and his speciality is the Hacienda of San Mateo of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico.

He told me that the Second Conde of the Hacienda of San Mateo, Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico "Miguel Del Berrio y Zaldivar" financed the expeditions and missions that traveled up north and that San Mateo could have gotten its name from the Hacienda San Mateo of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico which is our region in Mexico.

You can again see Almejas “Punto de Almejas” I marked it in green. Also notice to where San Mateo is suppose to be? There are two circles with numbers 4 and 6 and a river near it called, “rio de san mateo.”
I want to prove that San Mateo and other towns existed back then and this map is year 1777. So that would change the history at how americans write the version of the towns of the San Francisco Bay.
The ship San Carlos sailed into the area in 1775. The Ship “Goleta Sonora” sailed into the area in 1777.
Here is something of curiosity? The ship “San Carlos” that sailed into the area commanded by Capitan Juan De Ayala describes that he encountered the indios and in this instance he describes some of them as indios rubios con ojos azules:

http://oi61.tinypic.com/2n0ot3d.jpg

It was on page 29 of the document on his travel inside the bay. He also mentioned Isla del Angel which is today “Angel Island.”

Note that there were also expeditions on land as well such as "Juan de Anza" that reached the San Francisco Bay area at the same time.

The hacienda de San Miguel [de la Estancia Grande] is located within the jurisdiction of Lagos de Moreno (formerly Santa María de los Lagos) north of the city and was owned by the Gómez de Portugal family in that time period.

I have not found a single record that ties the Pedroza to the hacienda San Miguel de la Estancia Grande even though I have looked at all of the baptisms, marriages, and dispensas of all of Santiago de Pedroza's children and grandchildren. Everything I have found points to that family having an hacienda in what is now Encarnación de Díaz based on what is found in a book by Mario Gómez Mata and what is found at http://historiasyrecuerdosdeencarnaciondediaz.com/macias.html#num37

Ronnie,

This is my line. Independently, as historians or researchers we must prefer primary sources, as in documents that were made in the moment of the event. Thus, a marriage record is primary due to the fact that the marriage is occurring before the priest. A dispensa would be considered secondary, though it can be primary if a witness actually knew the ancestors and had information pertaining to the ancestry of an individual. Could you pass the link where I can study this dispensa? I am interested. I have already found numerous dispensas with major errors, others with only some mistakes; for the most part they are very reliable.

I descend from Nicolas Diaz de Tiscareno in the following manner, just to mention a couple of generations:

Nicolas Diaz de Tiscareno cc. Juana de Isasi y Campo (Martin del Campo)
Bernabe Diaz de Tiscareno cc. Maria de Cobos
Maria de las Mercedes Diaz de Tiscareno cc. Pedro Antonio de Medina y Castaneda
Coronel Simon de Medina y Diaz de Tiscareno cc. Trinidad de Urrueta y Velasco

This last couple married on 9 November 1814 in Guadalajara. Couple more generations down and you reach my father.

The answer is simple. Either the person writing down the ancestry or the
person providing the ancestry was confused and provided the name Bernabé
for the father of Fabiana because the name of the father of Juana Martín
del Campo alias Juana Isassi was Bernabé Martín del Campo e Isassi. The
name for María instead of Juana was also an error because all of the
records that deal with the wife and children of Nicolás Díaz Tiscareño show
her to be Juana and she is never mentioned as María.

For the other records that mention Juana see the following -

Hi Ronnie,

Luis de Padilla and Fabiana Díaz de Tiscareño are my 9th Great Grandparents and I have the parents of Luis de Padilla as Francisco Padilla and Ana Muñoz de la Barba and the parents of Fabiana Díaz de Tiscareño as Nicolás Díaz and Juana de Isassi based on this marriage record:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18622-38985-35?cc=1874591&wc…

I wasn't aware of a conflict with the dispensa. But, I would say that I would definitely go by the actual marriage and not the dispensa, since the children would know their parents names better than descendants 70+ years later.

I did a search for "flota de indias" in the PARS website and came up with a long list of all flotas that went to the Americas and from different areas. Many from Canarias, some from Portugal. Gives ship names, capitans, etc.

Different time periods that you can look at "Pasajero de Indias" and the documents give ship names, lists of people on that ship, etc.
