Viewing old church records:
I learned something about reviewing old church records
whenever trying to read them:  You have to read them
real slow and look for key letters that make up your
ancestors first and last names.  The overall
penmanship of the priests was very good, but the
copied documents are usually in poor condition because
of time. 

A couple of years ago I was looking at the 1700s Jerez
church marriage records, and I noticed my
greatggggggmothers last name of Sanchez.  The letters
S,a,c, h and z, stood out, and then I looked closer
and found my greatggggggfathers last name (Duarte)
which was spelled like Quarti.  Upon further review of
the record I found other names that were barely
identifiable (Salazar and Sanchez)which were the last
names of my greatgggggggparents.  They got married in
1797 in Jerez, and after years of research I was also
able to identify the other names listed on the record
as my aunt and uncle (Gamboa family).

Zacatecas roots, Cerros and Felguerez, which you can review as attachments in a separate 
email I have sent to you; these materials are also available on this site. My grandmother, 
Maria Felguerez, was the illegitimate daughter of Santiago Felguerez, who was also the 
illegitimate son of one the Felguerez family, hacendados  in Valparaiso and Colotlan---a 
complicated story. My grandfather, Jose Cruz Cerros, and my grandmother came to the US 
in 1919 or so. I have much data on the Felguerez but the Cerros genealogy has been 
difficult, to say the least, since I can not find

As an added note...for anyone starting out.  I recommend you read all 
the articles from the last link regarding handwriting and common 
mispellings.  The record abstracts become easier to read if you are 
aware of the handwriting 'issues' described.  Also searching for your 
ancestors with the common mispelling thrown in allow you to find 
baptizism and marriage records that you won't find otherwise.

That's how it was done in those dayf, Jofef (Josef).:) And to top it off, they weren't consistent. My Chavez ancestors surnames is spelled alternately Llabes, llaves, Chavis, Chaves, de Chavis. Ortiz looks like Breton sometimes. Penmanship left a lot to be desired in those days. Read Finding Your Hispanic Roots by George Ryskamp. Marge:)

Per the discussion of books, I have the second part of "Historia de 
Totatiche"  I am trying to get my hands on this book, the first 
part.  Here is a little write up on that book -

Esteban Valdés Salazar is the Totatiche town historian.  He has also 
written some genealogy books.  Since I am distantly related to him, I 
generaly will purchase his books when I can.  Especially convienent 
to me when he writes on the ancestors we share.  His sister, 
Inocencia Valdés Salazar, is the town historin for Momax.  I have one 
of her books too.  Especially convienent to me that Momax and 
Totatiche are my target areas of research. ;-)

Do a search by author last name of "Valdés Salazar".  And both his 
and her books will be shown.

I actually have read that book as well, also, Victor Villasenor wrote another novel after that one called "Thirteen Senses" which is a continuation of Rain of Gold.  I've read that one a number of times, too.  
Thanks for the advice....I will buy my books in spanish and get to it.  I am, though, a little afraid that I won't pick it up.  When I've ordered microfilm from LDS, I was able to stumble through the translations.'

I'll be positive, though and say that, YES, I'LL LEARN!
