Juan Saavedra (and Guzmán, Villegas, Gonzales, Espinosa)

Researching possible relative Juan de Saavedra in 17th century Lagos, and I ran across the de Saavedra y Guzman family, Basically, the below pedigree is cobbled from different sources. In some cases, I found this family group in online trees with the addition of my Juan de Saavedra and his wife Maria de Villegas:

PEDIGREE 1

1 Antonio de Saavedra Guzmán (Espanol) (c.1562-c.1620)

                m. Catalina de Villafañe y Alvarado

1.1 Juan de Saavedra y Guzmán (birth estimates range from c.1589/c.1590)

                                m. María de Monroy y Flores (birth estimates range from c.1590 to c.1633)

1.1.1 Juan de Saavedra (Espanol) (birth estimates range from c.1590 to b.1634 and most dates for death are c.1675)

                                                m. María de Villegas alias de Rodas alias Gonzales (Espanola/mestizo) (b.????)

                                                1.1.1.1 Ana Saavedra (b.1651)

                                                1.1.1.2 Ines Saavedra (b.1653)

                                                1.1.1.3 Juana Saavedra (b.1654)

                                                1.1.1.4 Josepha Saavedra (b.1660)

                                                1.1.1.5 María Saavedra (abt.1663?)

                                                1.1.1.6 Juan Saavedra (b.1664)

                                                1.1.1.7 Phelipe Saavedra (b.1664)

                                                1.1.1.8 Santiago Saavedra (b.????)

1.1.2 Isabel de Saavedra y Monroy (most online dates of birth are around c.1633)

                                m. Ines de Brenes y Mendoza (birth dates are again all over the map, usually c.1610 to c. 1622)

1.1.2 Isabel de Saavedra y Monroy (some pedigrees place Isabel as daughter of Ines de Brenes y Mendoza)

  • There are many issues with this pedigree like the overly wide age gap between Juan de Saavedra y Guzmán (1.1) and Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1), if it is adjusted to make more sense, then a large age gap forms between Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1) and Ana Saavedra (1.1.1.1).
  • There is a documented relationship between Antonio de Saavedra Guzmán (1) and Juan de Saavedra y Guzmán (1.1) but no verified date of birth for Juan de Saavedra y Guzmán (1.1) and his wives.
  • There is no documentation to support the relationship between Juan de Saavedra y Guzmán (1.1) and my Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1). Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1) seemingly appears from nowhere.

The proven pedigree I researched below belongs to another Juan Saavedra. It is based upon this Juan de Saavedra's marriage record and the baptism record of his daughter, María:

PEDIGREE 2

A Juan de Saavedra (b.????)

                m. ????

A.A Juan de Saavedra (Espanol) (b.????)

m.1633 Ana de Quesada (b.????) (daughter of María Alonso)

A.A.A María de Saavedra (Espanola) (b.1634) - Padrinos: Domingo Basques and Maria Basques

Note: I saw an online pedigree on geneanet.org identifying Ana de Quesada with Ana López De Quezada y Mendoza, daughter of Alonso Diaz de Quezada and Juana Bautista Sanchez de Mendoza. In 1637, Juan de Saavedra and wife, Juana Lopes, served as padrinos in the baptism of Gertrudes Hernandes Xuares. If the Juan de Saavedra (A.A) of Pedigree 2 and the Juan de Saavedra of this 1637 baptism are the same person, that would lend credence to the idea that Juan de Saavedra (A.A) married Ana López de Quezada y Mendoza.

Since Juan de Saavedra y Guzman (1.1) from the online Pedigree 1 was likely married to Ines de Brenes y Mendoza during the 1630s, he cannot be Juan de Saavedra (A.A) from pedigree 2, who is clearly too old to be the Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1), who married María de Villegas and produced children into the early 1670s.

I inserted Juan de Saavedra (A.A) from Pedigree 2 into Pedigree 1, resolving the age gap between 1.1 AND 1.1.1:

REVISED PEDIGREE 1 (with guessed ages in bold)

1 Antonio de Saavedra Guzmán (Espanol) (c.1562-c.1620)

                m. Catalina de Villafañe y Alvarado

                1.1 Juan de Saavedra y Guzmán (b. c1589)

                                m. María de Monroy y Flores (b. c1590)

                                1.1.1 Juan de Saavedra (Espanol) (b. c1610)

m.1633 Ana de Quesada (b. c1610) (possibly Ana Lopez de Quezada)

                                                1.1.1.1 Juan de Saavedra (Espanol) (b. c1632)

                                                                m. María de Villegas alias de Rodas alias Gonzales (Espanola/mestizo) (b.????)

                                                                1.1.1.1.1 Ana Saavedra (b.1651)

                                                                1.1.1.1.2 Ines Saavedra (b.1653)

                                                                1.1.1.1.3 Juana Saavedra (b.1654)

                                                                1.1.1.1.4 Josepha Saavedra (b.1660)

                                                                1.1.1.1.5 María Saavedra (abt.1663?)

                                                                1.1.1.1.6 Juan Saavedra (b.1664)

                                                                1.1.1.1.7 Phelipe Saavedra (b.1664)

                                                                1.1.1.1.8 Santiago Saavedra (b.????)

1.1.1.2 María de Saavedra (Espanola) (b.1634) - Padrinos: Domingo Basques and María Basques

                                1.1.2 Isabel de Saavedra y Monroy (c1633)

                                m. Ines de Brenes y Mendoza (birth dates are again all over the map, usually c1610 to c1622)

Everything fits now with no age gaps, but evidence is lacking that Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1.1), who married María de Villegas, is the son of Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1, formerly A.A), who married Ana de Quesada. However, I found some evidence to support this relationship in some baptism and marriage records documenting the family of Domingo de Espinosa:

PEDIGREE 3

1 Domingo Espinosa alias Vasques (mestizo) (bef1610-????)

                m. bef1626 María de los Reyes alias Gonzales (mestizo) (????-c1649)

                1.1 Ana Espinosa (b.1628)

                1.2 Felipe de Espinosa (b.1635)

1.3 Thomas Gonzales alias Espinosa (b.1635)

                                m. 1654 María de Silva (Marriage padrinos: "Juan de Sayavedra y su esposa María Goncález"

                1.4 Thomasa de Espinosa (b.1637)

                1.5 Catalina Gonzales (bef1637-bef1677)

m.1652 Ignacio de Silva alias Mesquita (Espanol) (Marriage testigos: "Juan de Sayabedra y sumuger Maria de Gonsales")

                1.6 Domingo de Espinosa (b.1639)

1.7 María de los Reyes (b.1643)

                1.8 Andres de Espinosa (b. c1649)

                m. 1649 María de Xaso (mestizo/Espanola) (????-1707)

                1.9 Domingo de Espinosa (b.1651)

                1.10 Juan de Espinosa (b.1654)

                1.11 Juana de Espinosa (1657-1719)

                1.12 Antonia de Espinosa (b.1659)

1.13 María de Jaso (b.1662) (Padrino: Juan de Saavedra "su tio")

1.14 Margarita de Jaso alias Espinosa (c1670)

The Saavedra and Espinosa families seem connected by multiple ties.

After the death of María de los Reyes alias Gonzales, Domingo marries María de Xaso.

When second wife María de Xaso’s namesake daughter María de Jaso is baptized, Juan de Saavedra serves as her padrino. He is noted in this record as the uncle of the younger María. The parents of both Domingo de Espinosa and María de Xaso’s are currently unknown, but I believe Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1.1) may be María de Xaso’s brother. (Mestizo Domingo de Espinosa is 20+ years older than Spanish Juan de Saavedra ... it's not impossible for them to be brothers, but it's unlikely.)

It is my hypothesis that María de Xaso is the same person as María de Saavedra (1.1.1.2), daughter of Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1, formerly A.A) and Ana de Quesada. If proven true, then this would be evidence that Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1, formerly A.A) and my Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1.1) are father and son.

María de Saavedra was baptized in 1634, so if María de Xaso is the same person then she married Domingo de Espinosa at age 15. That wasn’t uncommon then, and it would also fix her child-bearing years between ages 17 and 36, which sounds about right.

María de Xaso died in 1707. If she was born in 1634, then she died at about age 73, which again, sounds about right. (For some perspective on their age difference: Domingo de Espinosa would be about 100 years old if he lived until 1707.)

Last note, in the baptism of Phelipe de Saavedra (1.1.1.1.7), son of Juan de Saavedra (1.1.1.1) and María de Villegas, Phelipe’s father is referred to as: "Juan de Saavedra Gusman" – another piece of circumstantial evidence linking him to the earlier generations of the family of Antonio de Saavedra Guzmán.

I realize this proposed line of descent requires more work and shouldn’t be considered proven, but I am hoping someone in this group may be able to contribute missing pieces I may have missed.

Feel free to offer criticism, also.
